28 Nov 2009 - Scarborough Town 4 Ashbrooke Belford House 0

Town kept the pressure on leaders Ryhope with a 4-0 win over 4th placed Ashbrooke Belford House.

The visitors nearly took the lead in opening minute after a mix up in the Town defence left the visitors forward one on one with Rob Clark but his hurried effort was sliced high and wide.

Town were soon on the attack and a wonderful cross field ball from Wayne Brooksby found Josh Greening on the edge of the box but he shot tamely at Neil Skaife in the Ashbrook goal. Joel Ramm was next to try his luck but he dragged his shot wide after some neat approach play.

On 6 minutes Ramm burst down the left and forced Skaife to save well with his legs, the ball fell to Luke Jenkinson whose follow up fell to Josh Greening but pressure from the defenders meant he was unable to turn and get a shot away.

Town were not having things all their own way and Ashbrooke were getting forward at every opportunity. On 10 minutes an Ashbrook free kick was pumped into the Town box, Rob Clark managed to get a fist on it but the ball fell to an Ashbrooke player on the edge of the box but he was disappointed to shoot wide.

Ashbrooke were hassling and harrying Town into mistakes and on 13 minutes some sloppy play in the Town defence allowed Mark Green to curl a shot just wide. Luke Jenkinson should have given Town the lead on 17 minutes but with the goal at his mercy, his first time shot flew high and wide.

After a period of Ashbrooke pressure Town started to get back into the game. Midway through the half Josh Greening was fouled on the right hand side of the box. Greening curled the free kick into the box, which was spilled by Skaife. Matt Perry was quickest to react and his challenge for the ball with the keeper resulted in a Town corner. From the resulting corner Neil Waterfield rose highest but powered his header over the bar.

Luke Jenkinson and Georgie Rose then combined well and only some superb defending denied Town the opening goal. The game was flowing from end to end and Asbrooke hit back almost immediately, and Lee Harrison’s rasping shot rounded off a fine passing move.

Town were still creating chances but that elusive opening goal just wouldn’t come, Josh Greening had a shot well blocked and Joel Ramm sliced another effort wide.

On 37 minutes Wayne Brooksby fed the lively Greening, he held the ball up before rolling it back to Nathan Cook but his first time effort was deflected agonisingly over, but Town didn’t have to wait much longer for the opening goal. Nathan Cook picked the ball up in the centre of the park, he looked up and fed Josh Greening down the right. Greening carried the ball towards the box, looked up, and curled an inch perfect cross with the outside of his left boot, onto the head of Cook who had run 40 yards to get on the end of the cross. Cook's header from 8 yards gave the keeper no chance.

The game continued to flow from end to end. Lee Harrison shot wide for Ashbrooke and Luke Jenkinson was denied by some superb defending from Mark Lawton.

With half time approaching a Wayne Brooksby shot was blocked by the Ashbrooke defence. As the ball rolled back towards the keeper Georgie Rose nipped in and took the ball from him, with his back to goal and from a tight angle, he laid the ball back to Wayne Brooksby, who curled his shot into the far corner past a crowd of players.

The second period started with Town on the attack and Nathan Cook smashed over after a Town corner. Ashbrooke were still dangerous going forward and on 55 minutes Mark Green brought another smart save out of Rob Clark.

On 58 minutes Chris Charlton was the first player into the book after an innocuous challenge. Two minutes later Town were awarded a free kick on the right hand touchline on the half way line. Ashbrooke delayed retreating the 10 yards and Nathan Cook smashed the free kick into the Ashbrooke player. This sparked some ugly scenes and a lengthy delay as the referee consulted with both assistants before dismissing Lee Harrison for a headbutt on Cook. Matt Perry was unlucky to receive a yellow as he tried to split up the melee.

When the game restarted it was Ashbrooke who took the initiative and had a period of pressure but it wasn’t long before Town took control.

On 68 minutes Wayne Brooksby raced through the Ashbrooke defence, he held off the challenge of two defenders before forcing Skaife into another fine stop with his feet.

Danny Jenkinson, Joe Danby and Mark Barber were all brought on replacing Perry, Brooksby and Joel Ramm. All three subs then linked up well and Mark Barber's shot was forced away for a corner, and it was Barber who was on hand when the keeper mispunched the corner, but his shot was too high.

Town were turning the screw and the overworked Ashbrooke defence were starting to tire. Town were attacking down both flanks. After 78 minutes Luke Jenkinson attacked down the left, his cross into the box was brilliantly headed clear by Mark Lawton with several Town players waiting in the box.

Town killed the game off on 80 minutes. Danny Jenkinson linked with Mark Barber who in turn fed Georgie Rose, he was caught late as he tried to play Nathan Cook. To his credit the referee tried to play an advantage but brought it back for a free kick in a central position 25 yards out.

The ball was moved to Nathan Cook whose drive took two deflections wrong footing Skaife in the Ashbrooke goal. He tried to recover and got a hand to the ball but was unable to stop it hitting the back of the net.

Jamie Patterson was having a superb game in midfield and he teed up Luke Jenkinson, but his piledriver flew just past the angle of the goal. Town were creating chances at will and Ashbrooke were struggling to get out of their own half.

Danny Jenkinson played in Josh Greening but his shot was well saved by Skaife. Moments later Greening forced Alan Young into another great defensive block, and it was third time unlucky for Greening as his effort was headed off the line by Michael Charlton, the loose ball fell to Joe Danby who forced Skaife into another great save.

Town continued to press and on 88 minutes Josh Greening was held back as he advanced down the right. As players crowded the box Greening rolled the ball back to Nathan Cook who, from at least 30 yards, smashed the ball first time into the top corner of the net. It was a stunning strike to round off a superb team performance and a fine hat trick for Cook.

Town: Clark, Rose, Ramm, Waterfield,C Cook, N Cook, Patterson, Perry, Brooksby, L Jenkinson, Greening.
Subs: Danby, Barber and D Jenkinson

Goals: N Cook (3) Brooksby

21 Nov 2009 - Scarborough Town 8 Willington 1.

Town were back to winning ways after the disappointment of last week's cup defeat. Rob Clark regained the keeper’s gloves from Ricky Ossai and Matt Perry started on the right side of defence. Skipper Georgie Rose was back in his more customary midfield role in place of the injured Mark Barber.

Town started quickly and in the opening seconds good pressure from the forwards resulted in Wayne Brooksby winning the ball on the edge of the box, a great defensive block cleared his fierce shot. Town retained possession and Josh Greening sent Joel Ramm away down the left flank which resulted in a Town corner.

The Town midfield was dominating the game and on 10 minutes the Willington defence missed a through ball from Nathan Cook, Wayne Brooksby raced onto it, rode a challenge but fired high over the bar with only the keeper to beat.

Brooksby then turned provider as he sent Greening away, Greening held off the challenges of two defenders but his low cross was easy for the Chris Sawyer in the Willington goal.

Town were keeping possession well and working the ball from side to side. After a flowing move the ball was laid back to Nathan Cook whose first time shot from 30 yards seemed destined for the net but Sawyer leapt acrobatically to tip the ball over. From the resulting corner the ball was worked to Joel Ramm who for the second week on the trot planted a 25 yarder into the back of the net to put Town ahead.

Willington came back strongly and Rob Clark smothered well after a Matt Perry error allowed John Harrison to break clear.

Town looked dangerous every time they came forward and Sawyer was called into action again when he blocked bravely at the feet of Greening.

On 24 minutes Georgie Rose burst down the right and into the box, he rolled the ball to Luke Jenkinson whose goal bound effort was blocked, the ball fell to Rose who forced Sawyer into another great save. From the resulting corner, Brooksby tricked and turned his way to the byeline, his pull back found Perry, whose effort forced yet another great save from Sawyer but as the ball squirmed free Brooksby was on hand to stab the ball home from close range.

Five minutes later and it was 3-0. Greening was fouled on the edge of the box, he took a quick free kick to Ramm, his low cross was met by a stooping Rose who scuffed his header into the bottom corner past the despairing dive of Sawyer in the Willington goal.

Willington didn’t fold and fought back creating two half chances forcing Rob Clark into another fine block and Carl Cook’s sliding block flew just over his own bar. Town were good value for their three goal lead at the break.

In a bold move Coach Mitch Cook brought all 3 subs on at half time. Joe Danby, Danny Jenkinson and Matty Brown were brought on to replace Luke Jenkinson, Neil Waterfield and Georgie Rose.

Town were on the attack straight from the kick off and Ramm’s shot from just inside the box was surprisingly spilled by Sawyer, Joe Danby latched onto the loose ball but his looping effort was shepherded away from the goal.
On 54 minutes Brooksby broke down the right, looked up and picked out Jamie Patterson but Sawyer was quick off his line and blocked as Patterson struggled to get the ball down.

Greening brought another quality save from the overworked Sawyer after Danny Jenkinson was brought down on the edge of the area.

Then came the goal of the game, substitute Matty Brown picked the ball up on the half way line and raced toward the Willington goal, he outpaced two defenders and still in full flow danced round the keeper and tapped into an empty net.

The game was over as a contest but Willington kept plugging away and Town were hitting them on the break. On 68 minutes Greening fed Danby who went to ground as he tried to round the keeper. The ref pointed to the spot much to the dismay of Sawyer. Nathan Cook confidently dispatched the penalty low to the right.

Sawyer’s luck was out again a few minutes later. An aimless through ball by Town seemed to be coming straight to the Willington keeper but as he advanced to collect, defender Paul Mullen took a needless touch which deflected it past Sawyer who, despite a desperate scramble could only push the ball onto the post and in.

On 75 minutes Patterson gave away a soft free kick 25 yards out in a central position. Former Bishop Auckland player Andrew Richardson stepped up and curled the ball into the top corner giving Clark no chance. It was just reward for Willington’s hard work and persistence.

Town hit back within two minutes, Greening again fed Danby whose first time lob over the advancing keeping nestled in the back of the net.

Danny Jenkinson was getting forward down the right at every opportunity and Matty Brown was causing havoc down the left. It was Brown who rounded off the scoring on 82 minutes. Ramm cut into the box and cut the ball back to Brown who finished first time from 15 yards.

As the gloom descended there was still time for another Town penalty, after Joel Ramm was pulled down in the box. Willington’s Louie Jarvie was sent off for his protests. Nathan Cook stepped up but Sawyer capped a fine display with a great save down to his right.

The referee blew for full time in near darkness. Town were back to winning ways and put in a great team performance. Credit to Willington who played some good football and kept going till the end.

Town:Clark, Rose, Ramm, Waterfield, C Cook, N Cook, Patterson, Perry, Brooksby, L Jenkinson, Greening. Subs: D Jenkinson, Danby, Brown

14 Nov 2008 - Monkwearmouth Cup - Town 3 Ryhope CW 4

Wearside league leaders Ryhope scored twice in the last few minutes to knock Town out of the Monkwearmouth Cup at the Quarter Final Stage. With Rob Clark out injured, Ricky Ossai continued in goal, and the versatile Joel Ramm switched to left back for the injured Dean Craig.

Town started confidently, with Ramm passing inside to Nathan Cook who hit a blockbuster left-footer crashing against the bar but followed up to hit the ball wide with his right foot. After a foul on Wayne Brooksby, Cook's free kick was blocked by the packed defence. Ryhope's first chance came when a cross from the left reached Richard Jordan but his shot went straight at Ossai.

Brooksby hit a 25-yarder which skidded just wide of the post, but at the other end Ossai had to make a good save from John Bewick. Town pressed forward again with a mazy run from Brooksby allowing Luke Jenkinson a shot which was blocked and another from the rebound which went wide.

Town had gained the upper hand by now, and after 23 minutes a corner from Rose dropped into the goalmouth for Mark Barber to net from six yards out. Ryhope earned an immediate chance to equalise when Jamie Patterson was dispossessed and Martin Metcalfe went through but his shot bounced away off the right-hand goalpost.

Ryhope were playing decent football when in possession, but when Town gained possession the visitors transformed into a very hard side who tackled brutally and very unfairly at times. Brooksby found space on the left to hit a cross-shot which just skimmed the bar, but after 37 minutes Town went 2-0 up when Ramm received the ball 25 yards out and hit an absolute scorcher which left Ryhope keeper Neil Atkinson helpless. Josh Greening almost added to the total but his shot was deflected over the bar.

As the second half started, a debatable handball decision against Patterson allowed Dan Smith a free kick which clipped the outside of the post, but Ryhope got themselves back into the game when a corner was half cleared and returned into the box for substitute Glen Moan to head neatly home. Town substitute Robbie Hawkes, who had replaced the injured Luke Jenkinson at half time, was causing problems for the visiting defence and centred for Patterson, running in, to volley over the bar. In another swift attack, Hawkes seemed to be brought down but a corner was awarded.

Disaster struck Town after 66 minutes when Ryhope's David Newby found space to the right of the penalty area and whipped in a wind-assisted cross which floated into the top corner of the net to make the score 2-2.

As Hawke broke through the Ryhope defence again, a disgraceful tackle took him out of the game and after a lengthy delay he was stretchered off the pitch. Nathan Cook converted the penalty to put Town 3-2 up, but Town - having already just brought on their third substitute - were condemned to play the final twenty minutes with only ten men. Further assaults on Town players meant that for one brief stage Town were down to eight men, with Barber and Mark Waterfield both on the sidelines receiving treatment.

Just as Town's hard-working team seemed to have triumphed in adversity, Ryhope striker John Butler turned superbly on the edge of the box and hit a drive which Ossai reached but couldn't keep out. Then, after three minutes of added time, Lady Luck decided to throw her weight totally behind the visitors. Ryhope were awarded a corner when Ramm had seemed to have shepherded the ball over the line for a goal kick, and when the corner was headed goalwards, Ramm chested the ball off the line but was distraught to see the referee pointing to the penalty spot. Butler hit the ball hard and true to win the game for the visitors.

Town: Ossai, Rose, Ramm, Waterfield, C Cook, N Cook, Patterson (D Jenkinson 65), Barber, Brooksby, L Jenkinson (Hawkes 45), Greening (Danby 67).

Ryhope: Atkinson, Linton, Swansbury (G Moan 30), Hall, N Moan, Trewith, Bewick, Jordan, Butler, Metcalfe (Arkley 51), Smith

11 Nov 2009 - League Cup - Willington 1 Scarborough Town 2

Town started the game brightly, with Wayne Brooksby going through the home defence and rounding the keeper, only to see a defender block his shot. Within moments Luke Jenkinson sent Brooksby clear again, but this time his early shot was palmed wide by goalkeeper Chris Sawyer at full stretch. From the resultant corner, Robbie Hawkes tried a shot which passed harmlessly over the bar. With still only five minutes on the clock, a superb diagonal ball from Brooksby to the far post found Jenkinson who cut past a defender and finished well to put Town in front.
Willington then mounted their first attack, bringing a decent save from Ricky Ossai, and showed signs of picking up the pace and getting back into the game. Following a Town corner, Jenkinson blazed over the bar to the dismay of better-placed teammates.
On 22 minutes Town were caught off guard when a Willington header guided the ball into the box for Adrian Weston to shrug off the attentions of Town's central defenders, turn, and bury the ball in the net from eight yards for the equaliser.
The pitch was very slippery after recent rain, with players of both sides losing their footing. Willington upped the ferocity of their game with a number of late tackles which the referee may initially have attributed to the conditions but he was forced to give his yellow card a couple of airings after particularly bad challenges on Brooksby. The best move of the first half came shortly before the interval, Jenkinson making inroads down the right wing and crossing onto the boot of Jamie Patterson who had sprinted 40 yards to get there but was unable to keep the shot down
As the game resumed after half time, Town kept Willington penned into their own half with constant and inventive attacking moves. Hawkes was brought down on the edge of the box but the free kick was unproductive, then Brooksby failed to get in a shot when the goal was gaping.
On 66 minutes Town went back in front thanks to the efforts of two newly-introduced substitutes, Nathan Cook finding Josh Greening who turned and lobbed Sawyer with a superb finish to make the score 2-1.
Town were having most of the game, and not until the final quarter of an hour did Willington summon the energy to push forward. However this also allowed Town more space to break away, with Matt Perry getting forward effectively from an unaccustomed right back position.
Brooksby made a magical run leaving five defenders in his wake but shot straight at the keeper, and Mark Barber also showed he could beat opponents before unleashing a shot which was well saved. Town had little trouble ensuring victory, with Carl Cook and Neil Waterfield largely untroubled at the back and Ossai rarely called into action.
Town's win earns them a plum home tie with Teesside Athletic in the next round.

7th November 2009 - North Riding Senior Cup, Round Two - Fishburn Park 1 Scarborough Town 3

Town progressed to the Third Round of the North Riding Senior Cup after a well-deserved but uninspiring win over Fishburn Park of the Teesside League. Goalkeeper Rob Clark missed his first game of the season through injury, but Town welcomed back former Centre of Excellence goalkeeper Ricky Ossai. Striker Robbie Hawkes had recovered from illness to take a place on the Town bench.
Town took control from the kick off, with Luke Jenkinson breaking down the left and supplying Josh Greening who shot just wide. Then a delicious ball from Nathan Cook put Wayne Brooksby through on the keeper, but Fishburn's Paul Watson saved well and Jenkinson's follow-up was blocked. It was no surprise when Town went ahead after eight minutes, Brooksby passing to Greening who rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Town kept possession superbly with their opponents becoming frustrated and beginning to dive into tackles, and a sequence of over twenty Town passes allowed Cook a shot which went just wide. However Fishburn surprisingly levelled the scores on 21 minutes when Georgie Rose failed to cut out a long cross and Stuart Gregson netted with a first-time effort.
Town returned to the attack, with Watson hanging on to a Cook screamer at the second attempt, Mark Barber clearing the bar after a well-worked move and Brooksby foiled by the keeper after a series of quick one-twos had put him clear of the defence. Watson then excelled himself with a save from Jenkinson after a good run from Carl Cook but stood totally helpless when Nathan Cook met Brooksby's cut-back to crack the ball against the post from 20 yards out. Half time arrived with the scores level but Fishburn lucky to be still in the game.
Greening had the first clear chance of the second half, but Watson stuck out a leg to keep his goal intact. Brooksby cut in from the right but pulled his shot across goal from a narrow angle, then substitute Robbie Hawkes cut in from the right and rattled the crossbar with the ball bouncing down and away. Neil Waterfield and Carl Cook rarely seemed troubled by the home attack, but Park broke away with Town waiting for an offside flag and the visitors' defence suffered a rare moment of panic before clearing the ball upfield. Town continued to create chances, with defenders blocking shots from Greening and Rose and a Nathan Cook effort deflected over the bar.
The decisive events started in the 66th minute, when Park's Peter Scaife fouled Hawkes for an obvious penalty. Hawkes himself took the kick but Watson seemed to have pulled off a superb save, only to see the linesman indicating that he had come forward off the goalline too early and a re-take was ordered. Watson again blocked the Hawkes spot-kick, but this time the ball rebounded up into the air and Hawkes was able to react quickly enough to head the ball home with great relief to put Town 2-1 in front.
Ricky Ossai had to stretch full-length to keep out a Neil Hart effort, but Watson was soon back in the spotlight, saving from Greening after a good set-up from Rose. Town settled the match after 81 minutes when a Hawkes shot was blocked but Rose anticipated superbly to reach the ball and pull it back for Greening to make it 3-1. Turner saved from Brooksby from a narrow angle and Joel Ramm shot narrowly wide after a free kick, but Town had done enough to win the game without really hitting top form.

Town: Ossai, Rose, Ramm, N Waterfield, C Cook, N Cook, Patterson (Perry 73), Barber (D Jenkinson 65), Brooksby, L Jenkinson (Hawkes 49), Greening

31 Oct 2009 - SCARBOROUGH TOWN 7 SILKSWORTH 2

Wayne Brooksby returned after injury and Luke Jenkinson after suspension, but speedy winger Robbie Hawkes was missing due to illness and Matt Perry was unavailable. Carl Cook switched into the centre of defence, and Josh Greening made his first start of the season up front.

Silksworth earned the first chance of the game when Andrew Bowes went down the left and crossed, but Scott Walker was only able to hit the ball straight into Rob Clark's hands from a narrow angle. In the sixth minute good work from Brooksby earned Town a corner, which Joel Ramm lofted to the far post for centre back Neil Waterfield to nod his first goal for the club. Within two minutes Jenkinson went clear on the left and centred for Greening to make it 2-0 by blasting in from close range.

Silksworth reacted with a series of fouls, with Dean Craig, Greening and Brooksby suffering brutal attacks which earned free kicks and a number of stern words from the referee but no yellow cards. Craig was replaced injured after 14 minutes by Joe Danby going to right back and Joel Ramm switching flanks. Danby soon pushed forward and forced a save from Anthony Mustard in the opposition goal.

Bowes was only inches away from connecting with a ball across the Town penalty area, but most of the action was at the other end of the field. On 26 minutes Jenkinson made good progress as the defenders backed off and squeezed between the final two men to bring himself face to face with Mustard who stopped the initial effort put could not prevent the Town frontman from stabbing the ball home from point blank range. Only five minutes later Jenkinson went past the last defender again and was brought down, earning a penalty which he himself converted with ease to put Town 4-0 up.

With four minutes of the first half remaining, Greening robbed a defender wide on the touchline and cut into the penalty area only to be pulled down. The referee gave a free kick inches outside the area, from where Greening hit a powerful free kick which rebounded away off the crossbar. As the half ended Greening went clear of the defence and rolled the ball unselfishly to Nathan Cook who somehow put the ball over the empty goal from 8 yards out.

Soon after the interval Cook had a chance from his more accustomed range, a trademark 40-yarder rocketing just wide with Mustard looking on helplessly, then on 49 minutes sheer determination from Danby saw him burst through the defence to finish efficiently and put Town five goals ahead.

With the game all but decided, Town's defence made two errors of positioning which were to prove costly. Firstly a long cross from the right found Walker unmarked at the far post to finish with a neat header after 52 minutes, and another long cross three minutes later was met this time by an unmarked Andrew Place to head home and give Silksworth a glimmer of hope at 5-2.

Town replied with a 20-yarder from Greening which was held safely by Mustard, but as Silksworth seemed to tire Jenkinson was able to find more space and Town created chance after chance. Within the space of three minutes the Town striker pulled the ball back across goal with nobody able to get a decisive touch, then ended a good run with a shot deflected away for a corner and within seconds was denied when Silksworth's Michael Curtis made a desperate goal-line clearance. Jenkinson had been probing on the left and on the right, but after 77 minutes he was prowling in the centre and broke through a static Silksworth back line to claim his hat-trick and put Town four goals in front once again.

Substitute Matty Brown was denied by a great tackle, but it was Jenkinson again who set up the final goal, breaking clear on the left and squaring the ball past the keeper onto the goal line, where Greening and Walker tussled and the ball ended up in the net to make the score 7-2. Town should have had one more goal when a defender handled the ball off the goal line, but the referee and his nearest assistant were both unsighted at the time.

A convincing and comprehensive win for a free-scoring Town side which brings their goal tally to 70 this season from 18 competitive matches and keeps up the pressure on Ryhope CW at the top of the league table.

Town: Clark, Rose, Waterfield (Patterson 61), C Cook, Craig (Danby 14), Ramm, Barber, N Cook, Brooksby (Brown 60), L Jenkinson, Greening.

24 Oct 2009 - Town 3 Kirkbymoorside 5

A five-star performance from Kirkbymoorside stunned Scarborough Town with a 5-3 win at a rain-soaked Pindar Leisure Centre, with strike duo Paul Round and Alex Strickland netting a brace of goals each. Strikes from Joel Ramm, Mark Barber and a penalty from Robbie Hawkes were not enough for the Town youngsters who were overpowered in many areas of the pitch as the team went down to their first-ever league defeat at home..

Town started in a positive manner, Joel Ramm cutting inside on 4 minutes but his effort was saved low down by the advancing Darren Collier in the Kirkby goal. The home side tried to hold on to the ball playing their trademark triangle passing game, but the driving rain and the slick surface seemed to work against them. On 12 minutes, with Dean Craig off the pitch receiving treatment for a head wound, Johnny Brown slammed home the opening goal for the away side from 25 yards, after defender Matt Perry had been dragged out of position covering the injured left back's position.

There was a sign of Town's resilience two minutes later, Collier parrying a low cross to the feet of Jamie Patterson but his effort was cleared off the line by Karl Richardson.

Town equalised on 25 minutes. Carl Cook, who caused difficulties down the right hand side throughout the first half, swerved a beautiful cross into the box where Jamie Patterson flicked the ball on for Joel Ramm to deflect into the net for his fourth in two games.

Paul Round nullified Town's equaliser less than 60 seconds later, creating himself a yard of space to crash home with his weaker right foot to put the Moorsiders 2-1 ahead. This seemed to knock the spirit out of the home side and Alex Strickland sought to capitalise by taking advantage of a defensive error to draw a great save from Rob Clark.

Strickland got his name on the scoresheet six minutes before the break, sliding home from inside the six-yard box after the ball pinballed around the box following a free kick from Brown for Kirkby to take a 3-1 advantage into the half-time break

After the interval both sides struggled to control the ball as the ground got heavier and the wind got stronger, Dean Craig going closest to goal but his effort whistled past the post after a short corner routine with substitute Josh Greening.

Round nearly notched the fourth goal when he followed up a rebound from a Strickland effort, but his shot bounced back off the post and into the grateful arms of Clark. However on 70 minutes, the Kirkby strike duo combined in opposite roles, with Round putting a tantalising cross onto the edge of the six-yard box for Strickland to volley joyously into the net.

Eleven minutes later Round sewed up the result with a spectacular effort. Daryl Rivis rose well to flick the ball on for Round who acrobatically launched an overhead kick into the back of the net to make it 5-1.

Town pressed forward and gained two late consolation goals. Robbie Hawkes scored from the spot after a foul on Joe Danby and Mark Barber capped a superb flowing move with a low strike from 18 yards, but by then the game was gone and Town had finally lost their unbeaten record in League matches at home since August 2008.

Town: Clark, C Cook, Perry, Waterfield (D Jenkinson 60), Craig, Rose (Greening 46), Patterson, Barber, N Cook (Danby 70), Ramm, Hawkes.

17 Oct 2009 - North Riding Senior Cup - Scarborough Town 7 New Marske 2

Scarborough Town stormed into the second round of the North Riding Senior Cup after a remarkable victory over fellow-Wearside Leaguers New Marske. With Luke Jenkinson beginning a two-match suspension for a recent red card, Joel Ramm moved up front alongside free-scoring Robbie Hawkes.

Town's lightning start decided the contest within the first quarter of the game. In the fifth minute Ramm charged down a clearance and sprinted away from the defence, finishing confidently past New Marske keeper Justin Hutchinson. A long throw from Mark Barber led to centre back Neil Waterfield's header being pushed round the post by the visiting keeper, but a centre from the right was glanced on by Jamie Patterson for Ramm to score his second goal after 15 minutes.

Town were in rampant form, with Georgie Rose and Mark Barber hitting pinpoint passes from midfield and Wayne Brooksby displaying his usual trickery just behind the front two. A defence-splitting pass from Dean Craig gave Ramm another sight of goal and he chipped over the helpless keeper to complete a stunning hat-trick with the stopwatch showing 17 minutes and 34 seconds.

Carl Cook ventured forward and seemed to be brought down in the area, but New Marske's reprieve only lasted a further minute until a pass across the box from Brooksby was met by Rose with a scorching shot to put his side 4-0 ahead. On 24 minutes Brooksby was pulled down inside the area and Hawkes stepped up to convert the spot kick for Town's fifth in an astonishing opening spell.

With New Marske unable to stem the onslaught the tackles began to get stronger and later, with three visiting players cautioned and Michael Mackin lucky to stay on the field after a series of bad fouls. Barber hit a long-range effort just over the bar before Marske finally showed that they were not without skill and creativity of their own when Alex Anderson earned himself a chance but volleyed just above the crossbar. With the first half in injury time, Sean Mackin hit a superb left-footer past Robbie Clark to get the visitors onto the scoresheet, then Mark Barber hit another scorcher at the other end which smacked against the bar.

After the interval Marske showed a greater range of passing and movement, and on 56 minutes a ball was swung to the far post where Martin Say headed home to give the scoreline a more respectable look at 5-2. Some of the visitors' tackling was brutal at times, with Town players taking a succession of knocks - Ramm, Barber and Brooksby limped off to be replaced by substitutes Joe Danby, Sean Exley and Sam Smart, the latter two making their Town debuts.

Skipper Rose ventured down the left to have an effort tipped away by Hutchinson, and after 68 minutes Town scored again when a great pass from centre-back Matt Perry sent Hawkes away to torment the defence and pull the ball across goal for Danby to score from 3 yards out. Good work from Rose, Hawkes and Danby led to the final goal, Dean Craig getting into the right position to drive the ball home from 16 yards to complete the scoring at 7-2.

Town's opponents in the next round of the North Riding Senior Cup will be Fishburn Park, the game to be played at the Turnbull Ground Whitby within the next few weeks

14 Oct 2009 - Silksworth 0 Scarborough Town 2

With Carl Cook absent through injury and some of the younger players rested after a gruelling schedule of games, Matt Perry partnered Neil Waterworth at the centre of the defence and Joel Ramm continued at right back, allowing skipper Georgie Rose to organise things from midfield.

Town started brightly, with a superb run from Wayne Brooksby earning a corner which led to Ramm's close-range shot being blocked by home keeper Andrew Bowes. Robbie Hawkes then burst through the defence and tried to take it around Bowes but was thwarted at the last moment by the keeper's outstretched hand. Mark Barber had a 25-yarder tipped around the post by the sprawling keeper, and Dean Craig was even more ambitious with an effort from 35 yards which went just wide.

With Town dominating the initial stages Silksworth were finding it difficult to get into the game, but a long ball deceived the Town defence and gave Michael Renshaw a chance which he drove straight at Town keeper Rob Clark. Then the home side strung together a silky passing move which ended with a low shot from Michael Curtis from a narrow angle, Clark pushing it round the post for a corner.

Hawkes took the ball into the Silksworth area and evaded one challenge, then another, but his final shot was blocked. Brooksby charged down a clearance and ran clear, cutting in on goal, but Bowes once again came to Silksworth's rescue. After 41 minutes Town finally got the goal they had deserved, Mark Barber's throw-in being collected by Luke Jenkinson who twisted and turned before pulling the ball across goal for Rose to net from close range. On the stroke of half time Barber tried an audacious 45-yard chip which the backpedalling keeper tipped over the bar.

The second period began uneventfully, with Town's only chance from an 18-yard free kick after Barber had been fouled on the edge of the penalty area. Silksworth began to win more of the challenges in midfield and looked dangerous on occasions. Clark punched away from a crowded penalty area but the ball was returned and the Town defence looked uneasy before smashing the ball out of danger. Both sides used their three substitutes on an energy-sapping pitch, and it was Town whose new players brought a fresh impetus to the game. Good work from Brooksby created a chance for Matty Brown whose shot was saved and the follow up was deflected away for a corner setting up Nathan Cook to try an effort which narrowly cleared the bar. On two occasions Brown came within a whisker of getting on the end of diagonal balls from midfield, then Joe Danby progressed down the left wing and centred for Cook to push the ball just over the bar.

Some trademark trickery from Brooksby caused havoc in the home defence, and the game was settled in the 86th minute following a corner, when Danby turned and rifled the ball into the top corner to make it 2-0. Brooksby nearly capped a good night's work with a solo effort when he rode three rash challenges but hit his shot just wide of the target.

10 Oct 2009 - Shipowners Charity Cup - Cleator Moor Celtic 2, Scarborough Town 8

Town's thirteenth game of the season proved far from unlucky as they destroyed the hundred-per-cent home record of Cleator Moor Celtic and progressed to the Quarter Final of the Shipowners Charity Cup.

On a heavy pitch, Town were raring to go after a journey of four-and-half hours, with Robbie Hawkes turning to hit a volley which was well saved by Celtic keeper Grant Carson, younger brother of West Bromwich and England player Scott Carson who was watching from the sidelines. After only six minutes Town deservedly took the lead, Wayne Brooksby skilfully providing a cross for Dean Craig to arrive with perfect timing and head the ball home.

Things went from bad to worse for the home side when debutant Michael Lewis committed a dreadful foul on Jamie Patterson and was red-carded by referee Elliot Heward. The chances kept coming, with Robbie Hawkes unlucky on two occasions and Patterson shooting straight at the keeper, but Celtic's Craig Padley capped a good passing move with a powerful shot which was tipped over the top by Town keeper Rob Clark. Clark then had to get down smartly to keep out another Padley effort, but Town always looked dangerous and good work from Georgie Rose gave Hawkes the chance to shimmy past his marker and blast the ball past Carson to make it 2-0.

As the half drew to a close Town totally dominated possession and created a number of chances. Carson denied Brooksby, Nathan Cook blasted the ball narrowly over the bar and Hawkes also put a chance over the goal. However in the 44th minutes Hawkes set up Luke Jenkinson to net from a narrow angle to give Town a comfortable 3-0 lead at the interval.

Goalkeeper Carson outwitted Hawkes and Jenkinson in one-on-one situations, before Cleator Moor attacked down the right wing and pulled the ball across for Glyn Edwards to open the home team's account from six yards. A bold tactical move by Town boss Mitch Cook saw all three substitutes introduced after only 50 minutes, but this paid dividends as Town netted twice in the next six minutes. Danny Jenkinson set up Nathan Cook to make it 4-1, and a goalmouth scramble was ended when Robbie Hawkes blasted in from close range for Town's fifth.

The goal of the day came after 57 minutes, Edwards netting Celtic's second of the game with a sublime volley which rocketed into the net before Clark could move. Yet within 60 seconds Town restored their four-goal cushion when Brooksby cut in and hit a shot which Carson should perhaps have parried.

Hawkes completed his hat-trick with a fine individual effort after 64 minutes, intercepting a pass and outpacing the defence to round the keeper and make the score 7-2. Cleator Moor could have found themselves in even deeper trouble when their last defender Gareth McCarron wrestled Danny Jenkinson to the ground on the edge of the area, but the referee gave a somewhat lenient yellow card and the free kick was unproductive. Joe Danby had two well-struck shots saved by the overworked home keeper who also denied Danny Jenkinson as he attempted to round off a superb six-man passing move. The final goal came on 73 minutes when a Brooksby effort was saved but Luke Jenkinson netted the rebound to boost the scoreline to 8-2.

With Neil Waterfield in commanding form at the centre of Town's defence the home team created very few breakaways from the constant Town pressure, but Rob Clark was called into action as he made a good save from Edwards' deflected shot and bounced quickly to his feet to block the follow-up. Town ended the game as they had begun it, pounding away at the Celtic goal with Danny Jenkinson desperately unlucky not to notch his first Town goal despite several opportunities.

Town now progress to the Quarter Final of the Shipowners Charity Cup where they will have a home tie against Jarrow on a date yet to be arranged.

3 Oct 2009 - Wolviston 0 Scarborough Town 1

A Robbie Hawkes goal was enough to seal three points for Scarborough Town against Wolviston in a game ruined by the howling wind and bobbly playing surface.

Wolviston started the better side and the impressive Liam Jackson was unlucky to see his header go narrowly over the bar from a 4th minute corner.

A Mark Brydon shot was nearly deflected past the wrong-footed Rob Clark but he managed to get down well to keep the score at a stalemate.

Then on 20 minutes against the run of play Hawkes struck. Brilliant work from Wayne Brooksby managed to squeeze an inch-perfect pass through to Hawkes' feet and the in-form winger smashed the ball into the top left hand corner.

Mark Barber should have doubled the lead 8 minutes later but his effort was well saved by goalkeeper Adam Murphy. Robbie Hawkes had the chance to add to his growing tally when he was put through but his strike was straight at the goalkeeper.

After the interval Wolviston came out actively seeking the equaliser, Crossley drilling a shot from 25 yards which moved dramatically in the wind beating Clark, but fortunately for Town not the crossbar. They did have the ball in the back of the net soon afterwards, but lineswoman Annie Wilkie had her flag up for offside, much to the relief of Mitch Cook and the travelling Town supporters.

Town struggled to keep hold of possession but the defensive back four held off their opponents in the main, Dean Craig excelling from left back.

Matty Brown had the chance late on to seal the points, dragging the ball wide from 6 yards after good work from Brooksby on 86 minutes.

Dan Jenkinson drew a save deep into injury time from 12 yards after a swift Town counter-attack.

Town would have been relieved to hear the final whistle, Wolviston pressed for much of the game, but in reality it was a game likely to be decided by the odd goal owing to the poor playing conditions, the wind putting paid to any balls through the air and the pitch making the majority of first touches very difficult.

26 Sep 2009 - Scarborough Town 5 Hartlepool 0

Town ran out 5-0 winners against Hartlepool FC in a game marred by two red cards, Luke Jenkinson for Town and goalkeeper Mark Bell for the visitors. Robbie Hawkes netted four of the Town goals.

Hartlepool nearly opened the scoring four minutes in, Matthew Thomas finding himself in acres of space in the box but his half volley ballooned over the bar. The home side rallied and enjoyed long periods of possession but Robbie Hawkes dragged his shot wide of the target with only the goal keeper to beat.

Hawkes would not make the same mistake five minutes later when good work from Wayne Brooksby presented the opportunity for him to shoot into the top corner to give Town the lead. The lead should have been double three minutes later when Mark Barber slid the ball across to Luke Jenkinson who somehow managed to mis-cue in front of an entirely open goal.

Wayne Brooksby had a one-on-one which keeper Bell pushed around the post, but on the stroke of half time Town were reduced to ten men. Luke Jenkinson was sent off after kicking out off the ball.

Five minutes into the second half the numbers were equal, Mark Bell sent off for an almost identical incident with Nathan Cook, which did not go unnoticed by the linesmen. Cook himself stepped up to stroke home the penalty against outfield player Craig Woodward who had replaced Bell in goal.

Woodward did not show the goalkeeping ability of an outfield player two minutes later when he dived full length to save a shot destined for the corner from the youngest Cook brother. He would then deny Robbie Hawkes from a one-on-one which he tipped around the post, but Hawkes took his revenge five minutes later when he slid it past Woodward to make it 3-0.

An energised Town then looked to press for more goals in the last 20 minutes, Wayne Brooksby hitting a lob from 40 yards which sailed over the stand-in keeper, but crashed off the post.

Hawkes sealed his man of the match display with two carbon copy goals on 80 and 84 minutes to confirm a thumping win for Town.

Town – Clark 7, Rose 8 (Danby 70), Craig 7 (D Jenkinson), Waterfield 7, C Cook 7, N Cook 8, Patterson 6, Barber 7 (Brown 63) Brooksby 7, L Jenkinson 3, Hawkes 9

19 Sep 2009 - Town 4 Boldon 0

Scarborough Town strolled to an easy 4-0 win against Boldon CA after an exquisite brace from winger Robbie Hawkes alongside goals from Mark Barber and Luke Jenkinson.

However the game was overshadowed by a nasty incident at the end of the second half which led to Boldon right back Dean McKeown requiring an ambulance after colliding with his own post.

Town started brightly, Joel Ramm having the first effort on goal after just 4 minutes, but his weak effort was saved easily by Andrew Hunter.

It was Boldon who would create the next opportunity, seven minutes later Rob Clark forced to dive at the feet of Stephen Telford to deny him an opportunity from just 4 yards out.

Hunter was called into action twice in quick succession to thwart efforts from Luke Jenkinson and Georgie Rose.

On 20 minutes Town did break the deadlock, Robbie Hawkes and Georgie Rose manufacturing a chance for Mark Barber from 12 yards out to slam the ball into the back of the net, much to the delight of the majority of the 155 in attendance

The visitors nearly showed great bounce-back-ability 5 minutes later when Michael Meek saw his free kick beat Clark in the Town goal but, as happenstance would have it, not the post.

Then on 41 minutes while making a last ditch block from a Luke Jenkinson effort, McKeown smashed his knee onto the post leading to the second half being delayed by 15 minutes as paramedics attended the incident.

After the break Town came out looking brighter and more ennovating, and just four minutes into the second period Robbie Hawkes scoring from the edge of the Boldon box.

Town continued to press and started creating chances. Joel Ramm, Danny Jenkinson and Wayne Brooksby all having one on ones saved well, while Luke Jenkinson struck the bar.

It was not until the 72nd minute that they scored again, Robbie Hawkes again striking in a ball from outside the box into the corner of the portly Hunters goal.

The scoring was wrapped up 9 minutes later when Luke Jenkinson hit a low shot across the keeper and in via the post for his 9th league goal of the season.

Overall Town could feel happy with their afternoons work. The second half showing how many chances they can create when they play in chorus. Gating a particular player for Man of the Match however, Nathan Cook ran the game for the home side edging out the also impressive Georgie Rose.

12 Sep 2009 - Shipowners Cup - Town 2, Annfield Plain 2 (Town win on pens)

Scarborough Town went through to the next round of the Shipowners Charity Cup after a 4-3 penalty shootout win against Annfield Plain, with Town keeper Rob Clark saving the vital spot-kick in the shootout after having blocked an earlier penalty in the second half of normal time.

The game started slowly with the packed midfield of Annfield managing to cancel out the attacking threat of Town, who did little to help themselves with inaccurate passes gifting the ball straight back to the visitors.

Town's first clear chance didn’t materialise until the 31st minute, Luke Jenkinson cutting in from the left hand side to create enough space to get a shot in but his effort was well saved by goalkeeper Steve Kennedy.

Then in the 41st minute Dominic Elliott opened the scoring with a powerful half volley which beat Rob Clark into the bottom right hand corner after being put through by a header from Will Jarvis-Smith.

Finally Town seemed to wake up, the returning Nathan Cook driving a ball from outside the box which was tipped onto the cross bar, Joel Ramm managing to get the rebound on target but it was easily saved by Kennedy.

However the lead was doubled two minutes later, sloppy midfield play was punished with Smith beating Carl Cook for pace, to slam the ball across Clark to give the Plain a 2-0 lead at the break.

Fresh from what must have been some forceful words from Mitch Cook, the home side started the second half with more conviction, Wayne Brooksby putting a tantalising ball across the goalmouth which just evaded several advancing home players.

After 48 minutes Joel Ramm halved the deficit, Georgie Rose playing a beautiful ball which Ramm took in his stride and calmly slotted the ball into the net. Sensing blood they pressed on, but the only chance they could create was a Luke Jenkinson volley which Kennedy smothered at the second attempt to thwart the on-rushing Mark Barber.

All the hard work of the first 15 minutes of the second half was seemingly wasted on 61 minutes as Rob Clark fumbled a simple ball and tripped Michael Hall to gift Annfield a penalty, but fortunately for Clark he managed to redeem himself with a dramatic penalty save to his left to keep his side in the tie.

Luke Jenkinson then got the equaliser with 16 minutes left to play, a great counter attacking movement was finished off when Nathan Cook played the ball through for Jenkinson, who shrugged off defender Stephen Little and slammed the ball into the bottom left corner across the onrushing goalkeeper.

Annfield nearly stole it in the final few minutes, with Clark forced to make a double save following a free-kick from Garry Beadle.

The 30 minutes added time was played at a much slower pace as both teams struggled in the searing late afternoon heat. Luke Jenkinson nearly won the game for Town but Kennedy pulled off another great save when the ball looked destined for the top corner of the net.

The game moved on to penalties where Clark excelled, saving from Beadle after Luke Jenkinson had blazed over with Town's first penalty. This was nearly made meaningless however when Robbie Hawkes' effort came back down off the bar. This left Smith the opportunity to send Annfield through to the next round if he could convert his penalty, and while he managed to send Clark the wrong way the ball rebounded off the post.
And then in sudden death Clark continued his excellent penalty-saving afternoon by keeping out Roy Gordon's effort, leaving Carl Cook to strike home the winning penalty to send Town through to the next round where they will play at Cleator Moor Celtic on 10th October.

5 Sep 2009 - SCARBOROUGH TOWN 4 COXHOE ATHLETIC 1

Scarborough Town bounced back from the disappointment of the midweek defeat at Easington with a late rally to beat Coxhoe Athletic 4-1 having been behind with just seven minutes remaining. Super sub Robbie Hawkes scored a late brace after coming on and making an instant impact, Luke Jenkinson having boosted his tally for the season with the equaliser and Joe Danby adding gloss to the result with a stunning 30-yard strike.

Town started well with their usual flowing, crisp-passing football, Matty Brown and Neil Thomas having chances to give the home side the lead, but some dogged Coxhoe defending and several excellent saves from goalkeeper and man of the match Tom Orton combined with some wayward Town shooting contrived to keep the scoresheet blank.

Just before the break, after soaking up constant pressure from Town, Athletic won a free kick just inside their own half. The ball was floated in perfectly to centre back Paul Wilson whose powerful header was saved by Rob Clark but Adam McDonald followed up to give the away side an unlikely half time lead.

With a Mitch Cook team talk ringing in their ears, Town came out for the second half and looked determined to break down the Coxhoe back four. Luke Jenkinson drove a ball through a packed box only to find it cleared off the line by a Coxhoe head, and Neil Thomas forced a reaction save from Orton, who as the game flowed on looked as though he was determined that Town would suffer back to back defeats for the first time in their history.

Yet still Town charged forward, Matty Brown drilled a shot which beat Orton but not the right boot of Shaun Ryder behind him. Luke Jenkinson gave himself a yard of space and got a shot in, but again it was straight at Orton. With the game looking as if it was heading to a frustrating end for the hosts, Cook threw on his substitutes, Robbie Hawkes, Danny Jenkinson and Joe Danby, and it was Hawkes who would prove to make the crucial impact.

With just seven minutes remaining Hawkes' surging run led to a chance for top scorer Luke Jenkinson to fire in low and hard from the edge of the area. Town sensed blood, Jenkinson seizing the ball from the back of the net and leading the troops back to the halfway line. Could Town finally make use of all their possession and chances and turn zero points into three?

The question was answered 90 seconds later. A weary Coxhoe defence were unable to clear the ball properly and Hawkes’ fresh legs gave him that extra yard of space to smash the ball into the back of the net. This seemed to put a bit of ambition into the away side and they pressed forward looking for an equaliser, leaving large spaces which the young home side capitalised on with two injury-time strikes.

Robbie Hawkes doubled his tally for the game from six yards after a goalmouth scramble in the 94th minute, and Joe Danby cut inside and hit the ball sweetly into the top right hand corner with practically the last kick of the game.
Overall Town deserved the three points for the sheer number of chances which they created, but they must begin to take opportunities when they come their way. They played far better football than Athletic but may not get the same number of clear chances every week.

Town: Clark, Rose (D Jenkinson 80), Ramm, Waterfield (Danby 67), C Cook, Thomas, Patterson, Barber (Hawkes 77), Brooksby, L Jenkinson, Brown.

2 Sept 2009 - Easington Colliery 1 Scarborough Town 0

Scarborough Town's seven-match winning streak came to an end when they suffered a 1-0 reverse in miserable weather conditions on the Durham coast at Easington Colliery.
Town started in tentative fashion, with only one early chance as a Wayne Brooksby cross caused confusion in the home defence. Easington then took control, with a cross shot from Barry Turton pushed away by Town keeper Rob Clark and Paul Coxon pulling a shot wide after an impressive passing move.
A great through ball from Jamie Patterson was collected by Georgie Rose but his powerful shot from 15 yards was straight at home keeper Joe Atherton. His opposite number Clark was soon back in action, spreading himself well to make a save from close range, and centre-back Carl Cook made a brave block to deny Daniel Flounders after another spell of Easington pressure.
Easington were playing in a very similar style to Town, with crisp passing and very quick movement off the ball, and it was no great surprise when the home side took the lead after 31 minutes. An enterprising attack gave Adrian Sanders a chance to chip the ball over Clark, and although the ball bounced down off the crossbar, striker Turton was on hand to head the ball into the net from close range.
A determined run from Danny Jenkinson ended in a collision with the Easington keeper and a home defender, the ball running loose to Patterson whose snapshot was off target. As the half came to a close, Atherton found himself back-pedalling frantically as a long-range effort from Nathan Cook just cleared the bar.
Town made two half-time substitutions in an effort to restore some rhythm to their play, with a third replacement shortly afterwards. Joel Ramm bore down on goal and was denied by a brave save from Atherton, while at the other end the referee turned down a strong claim for an Easington penalty.
Easington, striving hard to maintain their long unbeaten home record, showed no signs of tiring despite conditions which were becoming wetter by the minute. A determined run by Nathan Cook was halted by a last-ditch tackle, and a free kick from Mark Barber was blocked by the defensive wall, but Town struggled to create their usual number of opportunities. As Town threw men forwards in search of a late equaliser the home side broke away dangerously without converting their chances, but in the end the home team deserved to take the points.

Town: Clark, Rose, D Jenkinson (Ramm 45), Waterfield, C Cook, N Cook, Patterson, Barber, Brooksby, L Jenkinson (Danby 55), Hawkes (Brown 45)

29 Aug 2009 - Monkwearmouth Charity Cup - Scarborough Town 2, Houghton Town 0

A young Scarborough Town side strode into the Quarter Finals of the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup with a 2-0 victory against fellow Wearside League newcomers Houghton Town. Goals from Joel Ramm and a stunning strike from Matty Brown were enough to see off the visitors in a game which saw Houghton reduced to 10 men midway through the second half after centre-back Wayne Harrison was sent off for two bookings
Joe Danby and Danny Jenkinson were in the Town starting line-up for the first time, and Joel Ramm was back in action after suffering an injury in pre-season. Regular starters Mark Barber, Dean Craig, Robbie Hawkes and skipper Georgie Rose were rested on this occasion. Town started well and put pressure on the back four of Houghton, who had crammed five into the midfield in a bid to thwart the outlets of Nathan Cook, Joel Ramm and Wayne Brooksby. The home side were always looking to get the game moving quickly from set pieces, however the visitors made constant attempts to stop this by putting a man right on the ball. This plan seemed to be working well for Houghton until on 26 minutes Wayne Brooksby broke down the left wing only to be hacked down by Mark Sewell 30 yards from the goal line.
On this occasion Houghton weren't as quick as they had been to prevent Town's ability to play swift free kicks, Matty Brown thinking quickly to put the ball down and clip it accurately over helpless goalkeeper Shaun Robinson to make the score 1-0.
The lead was doubled five minutes later when Houghton defender Nathan Raine, under pressure from Brown, rolled the ball across his own 18 yard box into the path of Joel Ramm who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Luke Jenkinson, looking to continue his great form from midweek, nearly added another when Wayne Brooksby ran from his own half and pulled the ball back to him, only for him to have one effort blocked by the keeper and the rebound effort cleared off the line.
Town keeper Rob Clark was a bystander for most of the first half, the only chance for the visitors being a header from Mark Robinson which went wide of the target.
The second half started slowly, the only noticeable action coming with the bookings of three Houghton Town players in quick succession. Then in the 67th minute, Matty Brown cut inside from the right and drilled a shot which rebounded off the wrong side of the post.
The away side were reduced to ten men when Wayne Harrison was giving his marching orders for two bookable offences, both for rash challenges on Wayne Brooksby.
The home side looked to press home their man advantage but only managed to manufacture two clear chances, both falling to substitute Robbie Hawkes but on both occasions they were hit too close to the goalkeeper.
Overall it was a great run out for Mitch Cook's team, who used the cup tie to blood some of the less experienced players, with the only real disappointment being that they couldn't add more to the score in a match where the result never looked in doubt. In the quarter final of the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup Town will play host to Ryhope CW,

26 Aug 2009 - Town 6, Guisborough Town HC 0

Scarborough Town celebrated their first game at the newly-refurbished Pindar Leisure Centre with an emphatic win over Guisborough Town HC. Despite the dismal weather, a record crowd of 261 showed their appreciation of the exciting brand of football played by Mitch Cook's youngsters. Star striker Luke Jenkinson was back in the Town line-up after injury, with Neil Thomas stepping down to the bench where Joel Ramm was also prepared for action after missing the opening phase of the season.

The first clear chance came after six minutes when Wayne Brooksby combined with Robbie Hawkes, and when the visitors could only half-clear their lines, Jamie Patterson hit a rasping drive which flew narrowly wide. Dean Craig began to overlap effectively on the left, and broke through to pull the ball along the six-yard line with no-one able to get the vital touch. Mark Barber was in good form, hitting a mixture of short and long passes from midfield, with Brooksby and Hawkes both swapping wings occasionally to create more uncertainly in the visiting defence.

On 17 minutes Town strung together a splendid passing movement which pulled the Guisborough defence in all directions, Jenkinson taking the chance to swivel and hit a sweet left-footer into the net to open the scoring. Another string of passes ended in a chance for Nathan Cook but his 25-yard effort went too close the keeper. Town's pressure paid off again after 20 minutes, and it was Jenkinson again who found the net to make it 2-0. A forceful run from Craig ended with a cross which Patterson diverted over the bar at full stretch, and a sublime touch from Hawkes set Craig on his way again, pulling the ball back to Jenkinson whose shot zipped wide of the keeper but also just outside the post.

Brooksby, running full tilt at the Guisborough defence from central midfield, was allowed to play advantage despite being fouled, and Jenkinson chipped the ball just wide. It took Guisborough fully 35 minutes before they mustered their first shot at goal, Paul Millward's shot being parried by Town keeper Rob Clark. As the first half came to an end, Brooksby took possession deep in his own half and progressed the full length of the field before crossing to Patterson whose shot was blocked at the last moment.

In the second period Jenkinson had a right-footer blocked, and quick thinking from Hawkes saw him take a throw-in and play an quick interchange of passes which saw him bearing down on goal but his shot was saved. At last Guisborough began to show some initiative, and a free kick from Millward curled just wide. Brooksby dazzled his way to the byeline but his pull-back was cleared, before Guisborough exerted their first bout of pressure, Clark having to take action when the visitors eventually found a way past Town's solid central defensive pairing of Neil Waterfield and Carl Cook. Town's three energetic young substitutes now sparked the home side into some incisive attacking moves, with Guisborough keeper David Usher saving a goal-bound effort from Joe Danby and Danny Jenkinson setting up a chance for Hawkes. However it was Brooksby who created the goal which settled the game, outpacing the defence on the left and providing a neat ball for Jenkinson to complete his hat-trick and make the score 3-0. Within two minutes Jenkinson had the ball in the net twice more, an unselfish pass from Barber finding the striker offside and then a debatable offside flag when a piledriver from Barber came back off the keeper. But it was the striker's young namesake Danny who provided a great pass for Matty Brown to make it 4-0 after 79 minutes with his first goal for Town, and the same player hit the goal of the game when he went clear on the left, looked up to assess the keeper's position and curled the ball sweetly into the top corner.

With the Guisborough defence now showing signs of fatigue, Brooksby made an interception and showed the visitors a clean pair of heels before finishing clinically to complete the scoring at 6-0. With a hundred-per-cent record after six games, Town now lead the Wearside League with a five-point margin over second-placed Ryhope.

22 Aug 2009 - Annfield Plain 0 Scarborough Town 1

Scarborough Town's victory at a sunny Annfield Plain continued their perfect start to the season with a fifth consecutive win despite a performance which fell slightly below that of recent games. Town had named an unchanged team but striker Luke Jenkinson returned from injury to claim a place on the bench.

After some uneventful opening exchanges, a determined run from energetic midfielder Jamie Patterson was halted by a foul. From the free kick Mark Barber set Robbie Hawkes away on a great run which led to a scramble in the home goalmouth before the ball was eventually cleared. Georgie Rose began a series of overlapping runs on the right , with Hawkes inches away from connecting with one low cross. Neil Thomas had a close-range snapshot blocked by keeper Steve Kennedy, who then bravely dived at the feet of Hawkes.

With both sides packing the midfield and pushing their defensive line high up the field, the strikers were finding it difficult to find space and any breakaways seemed to end with the linesman's flag halting play for offside. In a rare Plain attack, Town keeper Rob Clark got his angles right to block an effort from Graham Wilson as he cut in from the right wing. Town earned a chance when a solo run from Hawkes was blocked at the expense of a corner, but some sloppy defending from the visitors needed a firm tackle from Carl Cook to thwart a Plain attack.

The best action of the first half saw Wayne Brooksby go round a defender and loft the ball towards the top corner, only to see Kennedy pull off a superb flying save. The keeper then tipped away a dangerous cross from Hawkes but could only watch as Brooksby hit the outside of the post with a shot from a narrow angle.

The second period began with a long-range shot from Nathan Cook safely held by Kennedy who then had to swoop for the ball as Hawkes burst through. A run from Hawkes gave Neil Thomas a chance from three yards out but the keeper hurled himself into the way to keep his goal intact. A counter attack saw a long cross which ended with a looping header from Lewis Harrison, then Brooksby created a chance but blasted a powerful effort just wide of the goal.

Annfield Plain substitute Paul Henderson caused Town a few problems with his direct style, and a ferocious shot forced an excellent save from Clark. At the other end Patterson had a shot blocked and Wayne Brooksby was brought down on the edge of the box but the free kick was unproductive.

The decisive moment came after 76 minutes when Town substitute Joe Danby cut in from the right wing and took the ball past Kennedy, only for the keeper to bring him down. Nathan Cook stepped up to the penalty spot and crashed the ball home for his fifth goal in the last three games. There was more goalmouth action in the final minutes, with Clark diving to his left to keep out a drive from Henderson and Kennedy saving at the near post from Brooksby.

19 Aug 2009 - Willington 1 Scarborough Town 7

Scarborough Town continued their perfect start to the 2009-10 season with a comprehensive 7-1 win at Willington.

Mark Barber returned to the Town midfield and soon began to set up attacking runs by Robbie Hawkes and Wayne Brooksby on the wings. After nine minutes Brooksby played a neat pass for Neil Thomas to advance into the penalty area where he was pushed off the ball to give Town the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot. For the second game in a row Nathan Cook took the opportunity with confidence.

Jamie Patterson's brave header was blocked at the expense of a corner, and Thomas made a superb solo run past three defenders but did not get enough height on his chipped effort to clear the goalkeeper. Brooksby was denied by a brilliant tackle on the left, but Town went further ahead following a corner after 18 minutes when Hawkes spotted Cook in space outside the area and found him accurately for the young midfielder to blast his second goal of the game from 25 yards out.

Hawkes drew a great save from home keeper Chris Sawyer who then excelled himself in one-on-one situations by blocking efforts from Brooksby and Thomas. Brooksby then dispossessed the keeper and seemed to be pulled down before he could convert the chance, but the referee saw no infringement. Willington were clearly rattled, and the match official had already shown yellow cards to three home players when a flare-up involving Sawyer and Barber led to two more Willington cautions and also a yellow for the industrious Barber. In the final few minutes of the half Willington enjoyed their best spell of the game, Rob Clark saving a shot and a header before Town conceded a free-kick just outside the area and Martin Scott reduced the arrears to 2-1.

As the game re-commenced, a throw-in from Dean Craig was nodded on by Hawkes where Georgie Rose anticipated well but looped his shot over the crossbar. Defender Neil Waterfield intercepted a ball in midfield and surged forward, feeding Brooksby who was denied by Sawyer diving bravely at his feet. Thomas beat three defenders as he cut in from the right and passed to Rose whose powerful shot went over the bar. Town gave themselves some breathing space when Patterson played Brooksby through to take the ball wide of the goalkeeper and unselfishly pass across goal for Thomas to tap the ball home for his first strike of the season.

Substitute Matty Brown soon adapted to the pace of the game and his incisive pass brought a shooting chance for Rose which was blocked by the overworked Willington keeper. In a rare home attack, a misunderstanding in the Town defence gave John Harrison a chance but Clark saved well.

The best move of the game involved Brooksby and Brown, but Cook's potential coup de grace was parried by Sawyer. Brown then had a chance but pushed the ball just outside the far post, however the inevitable fourth goal came when Brooksby darted on to a through ball and passed for Thomas to tap in from short range after 68 minutes. Within two minutes an opportunist strike from Brooksby made it five after he intercepted a free kick from Sawyer and took one touch before netting accurately from outside the box.

Cook muscled through two challenges in midfield to set up a chance for Joe Danby which he took with confidence to add number six, and his fellow teenage substitute Danny Jenkinson burst through to bring yet another great save from the home keeper. The scoring was completed on 82 minutes when Brown took the ball to the byeline and produced an excellent cross for Thomas to touch in at the far post. There was still time for Sawyer to produce stunning saves from Brown and Cook as Town mounted wave after wave of attacks in the final moments.

Town: Clark, Rose (D Jenkinson 61), Craig (Danby 61), Waterfield, C Cook, N Cook, Patterson, Barber, Brooksby, Thomas, Hawkes (Brown 55)

15 Aug 2009 - Ryhope CW 1, Scarborough Town 2

Town were forced into major changes through injury and absences, meaning a first start of the season for Dean Craig, Matty Brown and Neil Thomas. Carl Cook moved to centre back, with skipper Georgie Rose continuing at right back.

Ryhope, having gained convincing wins in their first two games, started with confidence and earned the first chance when John Butler cut in menacingly from the left. Town also made good use of the left wing with Robbie Hawkes looking sharp. After nine minutes Town earned a corner on the right, allowing Wayne Brooksby to trick his way into the box and pull back to Thomas whose goal-bound effort was cleared off the line.

Ryhope were throwing themselves into tackles and denying Town time and space. The home team then had a good spell of possession and exerted some pressure, with Neil Waterfield heading clear and goalkeeper Rob Clark punching the ball away. Having successfully defended two corners, Town broke forward but Matty Brown was barged off the ball when he seemed to have gone clear on the left. Hawkes put Brooksby through but home keeper Joe Thompson blocked the shot bravely from close range. Hawkes then had a twenty-yarder saved and another effort deflected for a corner. At the other end Dave Newby cut inside but shot straight at Clark.

As the first half came to an end, Town built up the pressure. Brown fed Hawkes whose cut-back was cleared over his own bar by Neil Moan. Brooksby then fooled his marker with a neat turn and was brought down for a penalty which Ryhope did not dispute. Nathan Cook dispatched the spot kick with confidence to earn Town a 1-0 lead as the teams left the field.

An intricate move from Town led to a Hawkes shot which Thompson saved low down, then his opposite number Clark excelled himself with a full-length dive to tip away a looping header. The Town keeper then received a yellow card after racing from his area and being judged to have fouled a Ryhope attacker. Richie Jordan cleaved his way through the Town defence and shot powerfully into the side netting, whilst at the other end Thompson made excellent saves from Rose and Carl Cook.

Just as the pitch was being hit by a torrential downpour, Ryhope set up a scramble in the visitors' goalmouth which ended when Jordan slammed the ball home for the equaliser. With Rose moving into centre midfield, Brooksby began to find more space on the left, and one mazy run ended with a cross which eluded the onrushing Matty Brown by a whisker. Town pressed hard for the winner, with efforts from Brown, Neil Waterfield and Joe Danby all blocked, then a goalmouth scramble in the 89th minute ended with a half-hit clearance to just outside the box, where Nathan Cook pounced to send a superb shot screaming into the net to win the match.

Town: Clark, Rose, Waterfield, Carl Cook, Craig, Hawkes (Danby 62), Patterson, Brown, Nathan Cook, Thomas (Danny Jenkinson 70), Brooksby.

12 Aug 2009 - Kirkbymoorside 1 Scarborough Town 3

Town made it two Wearside League wins in a row with a skilful and energetic performance at Kirkbymoorside.

Town unsurprisingly named an unchanged side after Saturday's excellent win at Jarrow, but were almost caught napping in the first minute when a swift Kirkby raid called Town keeper Rob Clark into action as the ball rebounded goalwards from his own defender Carl Cook. Wayne Brooksby then set up a Town attack with some smart footwork on the right wing, earning a corner which was then worked across for Liam Gildea to shoot wide from 16 yards. The Moorsiders suddenly looked unsettled, and a long throw-in from Mark Barber found its way through for Luke Jenkinson to head the ball into the net from ten yards to establish a 1-0 lead. Kirkby countered with Alex Strickland shooting powerfully over the bar and Andrew Ferguson hitting the post with a swerving 30-yarder when Town struggled to clear after Clark had spilled a shot.

Town were attacking down both wings in contrasting styles, Georgie Rose combining well with Brooksby on the right, with Carl Cook coming forward to interchange passes with Robbie Hawkes on the left. Hawkes got to the bye-line and pulled back for Jenkinson to shoot wide, then a superb twelve-pass move ended with Nathan Cook just off target. Hawkes then switched to the right, surging through the defence and cutting in for a one-on-one with keeper Darren Collier which the Kirkby custodian blocked superbly. Collier then drew applause from the crowd with a flying save from a Brooksby effort.

Jenkinson was brought down with a no-holds-barred tackle, the free kick leading to a scramble and Jamie Patterson blasting over the bar. Kirkby had a rare sniff of goal when a free kick from Paul Round flashed narrowly wide, but Town were looking the superior outfit with Rose and Carl Cook overlapping to set up a number of chances. On 33 minutes Hawkes tucked the ball neatly through for Brooksby to finish neatly and put Town 2-0 ahead, and just before the interval a clever touch from Hawkes created a chance for Rose to blast the ball into the net hard and low from fifteen yards to make it three.

The first chance of the second half fell to the Moorsiders' Sarjo Cham but the industrious forward pulled the ball disappointingly wide. Town's Brooksby then took a gamble to block a clearance from Collier and take the ball round the keeper but found the angle too narrow to hit the unguarded net. Johnny Brown had Kirkby's next chance with a 25-yard free kick which went wide.

With the game seemingly under control, Town used their three substitutes and made several positional changes, but could still have added to their lead when Mark Barber's shot was deflected away for a corner and Brooksby's shot was tipped wide by the heroic Collier. On 63 minutes Town paid for what was perhaps a touch of over-confidence when Nathan Cook was robbed on the edge of his own area and Brown took advantage to reduce the deficit.

After a disjointed period, Town clicked back into gear with Joe Danby heading over the bar and Carl Cook rampaging forward but shooting straight at the home keeper. As Matty Brown broke away, Collier rushed from his area to block the ball and was perhaps fortunate that the referee's card was only a yellow one. Town continued to carve openings, Rose having a shot deflected for a corner and Gildea's goal-bound effort cleared off the line by Ryan Rivis. Hawkes then played a through ball for Brown to head neatly over the keeper but just outside the post and in the last few minutes Collier made two excellent saves as Brown bore down on goal.

Town's win was not as convincing as the 6-1 result at Jarrow on Saturday, but it was well-deserved win against a side who competed fiercely over the full ninety minutes.

Town: Clark, Rose, Waterfield, Gildea, C Cook, Patterson, Barber (Craig 57), N Cook, Hawkes, Brooksby (Danby 61), Jenkinson (Brown 52).

8 August 2009 - Jarrow 1 Scarborough Town 6
Picture right: The Wearside League season gets underway as Wayne Brooksby passes to Luke Jenkinson at the kick off

Scarborough Town sent shock-waves through the Wearside League with a stunning 6-1 away win at much-fancied Jarrow. Last season's fifth-placed team had no answer to the constant action and movement of the League newcomers and were left shell-shocked and dispirited.

Skipper Georgie Rose filled the right-back slot in the absence of injury victim Joel Ramm, with Nathan Cook coming into midfield for only his fourth league start in a Town shirt.

Town began with confidence, Wayne Brooksby's close control setting up a long-range effort from Mark Barber which was just wide. Town keeper Rob Clark was forced to leave his box to head clear, but most of the action was in Jarrow's last third, a Robbie Hawkes curling effort clawed away by home keeper Tony Orr who then bravely blocked the follow-up from Rose. Luke Jenkinson set up a chance for Jamie Patterson who was denied by a last-ditch clearance, and Liam Gildea ventured forward but passed unselfishly when in a shooting position and the chance was deflected over the bar.

Town were rocked after 22 minutes when a neat Jarrow build up saw Kris Goss hit an unstoppable curler to put the home team ahead with their first effort at goal. Town were not behind for long, as Robbie Hawkes burst through the Jarrow back line and slotted the ball into the net for a well-deserved equaliser. Keeper Orr parried long-range efforts from Barber and Brooksby and reacted quickly to claim the loose ball before the Town attackers. The Jarrow tackles started to become more desperate, but 25-yard free kicks from Barber and Brooksby failed to trouble the keeper. After a superb spell of possession football just before the interval, Jenkinson had a shot blocked on the line but netted at the second attempt to put Scarborough in front.

The second half started with a period of pacey end-to-end football, and although Town's central defenders Gildea and Neil Waterfield rarely looked troubled, Clark had to make a good save to deny Jarrow. A trademark short-corner routine from Town ended with the ball in the back of the Jarrow net, but the assistant referee controversially ruled that the corner had not been taken legally. Rose worked an opening for Jenkinson whose shot was held, but the inevitable third goal arrived when Brooksby took possession on the edge of the penalty area and placed the ball neatly inside the post.

Orr distinguished himself again by saving a Carl Cook piledriver at full length and recovering to foil Jenkinson's point-blank effort. On 76 minutes sustained pressure brought a series of chances which were half-cleared before Jenkinson slammed the ball in from 18 yards to make it 4-1. Town were now rampant, with a catalogue of short passes keeping their opponents chasing fruitlessly. Substitutions allowed Matty Brown and Joe Danby to show their skills, with Rose moving further up front and setting up chance after chance.

Another well-rehearsed corner after 85 minutes saw Brooksby feed Jenkinson whose sweet left-footer beat the keeper to complete a hat-trick. Town topped off their six-pack when Dean Craig rampaged forward and slammed the ball home with a thunderbolt from the edge of the box.

Scarborough Town: Clark, Rose, Waterfield, Gildea, C Cook, Patterson (Brown 75), Barber, N Cook (Craig 66), Hawkes (Danby 74), Brooksby, Jenkinson

Pre-season friendly:
Tadcaster Albion 1 Scarborough Town 3
Scarborough Town outsmarted their Northern Counties East League opponents as they powered to a convincing 3-1 win at Ings Lane.

Town began with Josh Greening and Luke Jenkinson up front, and skipper Georgie Rose in an unfamiliar role at right back. Town went straight into their usual crisp passing game and Robbie Hawkes caused panic in the Brewers' defence with two dangerous crosses. Town keeper Rob Clark made a great full-length save when a rare Albion attack saw a header nearly creep inside the post, but a superb Town move saw Hawkes pull the bar back to Mark Barber whose thunderous drive crashed against the bar after brushing the home keeper's fingertips.

Greening and Hawkes had long-range efforts gathered by keeper Craig Cammage, whilst at the other end Tadcaster barely had sight of the Town goal with Neil Waterfield in commanding form at centre back alongside Liam Gildea. Town were keeping possession well and Albion began to look rattled as they were outplayed for lengthy periods of the game.

After 28 minutes Wayne Brooksby played an incisive ball into the box for Jenkinson to advance on goal and beat Cammage with confidence to put Town 1-0 in front. The lead was doubled within six minutes, and again it was Jenkinson who netted from a narrow angle after the home keeper had failed to gather the ball. Town pounded the Brewers' goal until half time, with Cammage making a superb save from Matty Brown and then denying Joe Danby with his feet.

The second half was played at a lower tempo, but Brown shot just over from a Hawkes cross, then a surging run from Joel Ramm gave Hawkes a chance but he pulled his shot wide. Town upped the pressure again and penned Albion back, Cammage making another outstanding save from Dean Craig.

Town made a number of substitutions and various players showed their versatility in different positions, but with 12 minutes left Tadcaster got on the scoresheet when Andy Green netted from the edge of the box via a deflection. Town flooded back into Tadcaster territory, however, and a perceptive pass from Brown saw Greening narrowly miss the target. Then Brooksby played a great ball wide to Greening who cut in under pressure from two defenders and netted from a narrow angle to finish the game with a well-deserved 3-1 victory.

Town: Clark, Rose, Gildea, Waterfield, Cook, Barber, Brooksby, Patterson, Hawkes, Greening, Jenkinson, Ramm, Craig, Brown, Danby, Smart.

Pre-season friendly:
EASTFIELD ST JAMES 1 SCARBOROUGH TOWN 3

Scarborough Town continued their warm-up for the Wearside League campaign with a 3-1 victory against Eastfield St James. A fiercely-contested game turned Eastfield's way after 20 minutes when a goalmouth scramble saw a shot take a ricochet and bobble into the Town net. The visitors equalised on 31 minutes when Wayne Brooksby played Jon Richardson in to finish clinically.

After wholesale chances at the interval, Town took the lead on 55 minutes when Ged Dalton turned neatly and hit a low left-footer from 25 yards. Both keepers pulled off good saves, but Town wrapped the game up after 85 minutes when Matty Brown was brought down and Luke Jenkinson converted the penalty.

Town: Robinson, Cook (D.Jenkinson), Waterfield (Hickin), Smart (Gildea), Gibb (Patterson), Ramm, Danby (Brown), Brooksby, Thomas (Dalton), Hawkes (Glendenning), Richardson (L.Jenkinson)
