UNDER-19 MATCH REPORTS

12 May 2010 - Town 0 Garforth Town 0

Town finished the season as unbeaten champions of the Northern Under-19 Alliance Eastern Division, but failed to hit the net for the first time in over two years.  With Garforth arriving late for the kick off, the game was reduced to two halves of 35 minutes each way.

Sean Exley played a perceptive ball to put Matty Brorwn away but the visiting keeper managed to get a foot to the ball and deflect the shot for a corner.  Joe Danby then went clear of the defence and went round the keeper but was unable to get the final shot away from a tight angle.  Then Brown showed great control to clip the ball over a defender and slip the ball past the goalkeeper - but only onto the goalpost.

Garforth had a couple of long-range efforts in the second half, but keeper Rob Clark was not unduly concerned.  Substitute Luke Foster drew a great save from the keeper and was unlucky to head the ball just wide as a cross came in from the right wing.  Robbie Seaton was also denied by a superb save and followed up but hit the ball straight at the keeper.

Town: Clark, Holmes(Glendinning 50), Gibb, Smart, Clayton, Gunn (Seaton 55), Danby, Exley, Logan, Brown, Fenwick (Foster 50)

19 Apr 2010 - Town 4 Pocklington Town 2

Pocklington took the lead after 14 minutes after a cross from the right wing found their number 10 who chested the ball down and smashed it home from the edge of the six-yard box. Scarborough equalised after 16minutes with a shot from the edge of the box from Sean Exley. Scarborough took the lead after 30 minutes with a scrambled goal from Ryan Braithwaite, Adam Magson made sure Scarborough turned round ahead at half time with a good save from a full-blooded shot from 15 yards by the Pocklington forward.

Sean Exley turned the defender and curled a shot just over, before Pockington broke away and Adam Magson saved the day after the Pocklington forward was clear on goal. Robbie Seaton extended Scarborough's lead after 62 minutes with a firm header from about 12 yards out after a good cross from the right wing. Robbie Seaton then extended Scarborough's lead to 4-1 when he ran onto a through ball which split the defence, he beat the keeper to the ball outside the box and walked the ball into the empty net.

After 80 minutes there was a mix up in the home defence and the Pocklington number 11 nipped in to shoot into the bottom corner in off the post.

Town: Adam Magson, Niall Gibb, Alistair Holmes , Ryan Braithwaite, Sam Smart, Josh Clayton, James Gunn, Matty Turnbull, Sean Exley, Tom Fenwick, Robbie Seaton.  Subs used: Luke Foster, Jon Richardson.

15 Apr 2010 - Town 1 Glasshoughton Welfare 1

Despite Scarborough Town's hectic schedule of Wearside League fixtures, the Under-19s were able to select from a fairly strong squad for the visit of Glasshoughton.  However the West Yorkshire side proved to be very tough opponents and became the first side to take points off Scarborough all season.

Close control was very difficult on a bone-hard and dusty pitch, and after 10 minutes James Gunn was caught on the wrong side of his opponent and brought him down, the referee rightly awarding a penalty which Glasshoughton converted confidently.  There were half chances at both ends, but clear shots at goal were few and far between.  Town's effort could not be faulted but their usual fluency was absent.

Not until after the half time break did the home side begin to click.  A free kick from 20 yards out was clipped over the bar by Joe Danby, then Alistair Holmes ventured upfield for a corner and had a chance which again went over the crossbar.  On 70 minutes Sean Exley earned a corner and swung the kick into the centre for Robbie Seaton to head powerfully into the net.  Rob Clark in the Town goal had not been tested too much but soon had to get down sharply to make a save.  A mis-kick from Josh Clayton gave 'Houghton a chance which went straight at the home keeper, then Welfare had the ball in the net after Clark dropped the ball but had clearly recovered it and was fouled before the ball came loose again.

Substitute Josh Greening livened up the last ten minutes, beating two players and crossing for Matty Turnbull to put the ball over the bar, and right on the final whistle Exley had a shot which was well saved by the keeper to ensure the points were shared - a fair result on the night.

Town: Clark, Danby (Gibb 60), Clayton, Holmes, Braithwaite, Logan, Turnbull, Gunn (Greening 80), Fenwick, Brown (Seaton 60), Exley

29 Mar 2010 - Under-19s 8 Pontefract Collieries 2

Town's youngsters were held to 1-1 at half time but ran riot in the second period to continue their hundred-per-cent league record.  In awful weather conditions on a very wet pitch, Town created several early chances, Billy Logan having a shot blocked, Josh Greening showing neat footwork but pulling the ball wide, and Joe Danby creating a chance which he blasted just outside the post.  However on 23 minutes Pontefract went ahead, a long cross finding the striker at the far post to nod into goal.  Greening then broke through the visiting defence but the ball escaped his control, and it was not until the 39th minute that Town drew level with an excellently constructed move.  A quick throw by Ryan Braithwaite was gathered by Matty Brown who sent Greening away on the left and then got into the right position to meet the return pass and net the equaliser.
Nathan Cook played an accurate long ball to Logan whose low drive was spectacularly saved by the visiting keeper, then Cook chanced a shot which was deflected and grasped by the keeper, but the first half finished all-square at 1-1.

After changing ends, Town took only three minutes to take the lead when Logan ran on to a Cook pass and cut inside to finish neatly.  Within two minutes Logan was away again on the right, this time cutting the ball unselfishly across to Greening to make it 3-1.  And on 54 minutes Greening exploited the space on the right to pull the ball back for Danby to hit Town's fourth from 6 yards out.  On 61 minutes a long-range Pontefract free kick sailed majestically into the Town net  to cut the deficit, but Town pressed forward again and Logan rounded the keeper and from a narrow angle put the ball into the six-yard box where there was mass panic before the ball was finally cleared.

After 67 minutes Town took a short corner on the right, and Danby clipped a perfect cross for Sam Smart to head firmly into the net for number five. On 73 minutes Brown broke away and although his shot was blocked Tom Fenwick came steaming in to score from ten yards.  On 80 minutes an unfortunate Pontefract defender lobbed the ball neatly over his own helpless keeper to add a seventh Town goal, and the scoring was completed on 84 minutes when Danby went clear of the defence and chipped the ball neatly over the keeper make it 8-2.

Town:  Clark, Holmes, Braithwaite, Clayton, Smart, Cook (Fenwick 60), Danby, Gunn, Logan, Brown, Greening (Turnbull 60).

Thursday 25th March 2010 - Northern Under-19 Alliance - Town 3 Pickering 1 (match abandoned after 89 minutes)

Town were well in control of this first-versus-second contest and were leading 3-1 when the floodlights failed - with one minute of playing time remaining!

The game had started quietly and was interrupted for a lengthy period after an injury to Sean Exley who damaged his knee in a tackle.  He was replaced by substitute Jon Richardson.  The game was keenly contested but without the competitive bite of the League Cup match between the teams the previous week.  Richardson ran onto a through ball from Matty Brown and pulled the back across goal where it was half cleared for Joe Danby to try a long-range effort.  Then Danby and Richardson worked an opening from a short corner, only for Josh Clayton to blast over the bar from 6 yards out.  Josh Greening was denied by a flying save from the Pickering keeper, but Town took the lead after an intricate move between Brown and Nathan Cook gave Danby the chance to find the bottom corner after 30 minutes.

Josh Greening had an effort saved by the keeper but increased the lead to 2-0 when he broke clear of the defence and circled the keeper before netting.

At the start of the second period Greening had a firm shot deflected by the keeper's knees, but the  Town defence was sloppy at times, Danby grateful to see a Pickering shot flash wide of the post after being robbed, then Neil Thomas giving the ball away and Rob Clark had to make the save.  Billy Logan, playing quite deep in midfield, sent Brown away but his pull-back went between two Town players in front of goal.  A Neil Thomas cross just evaded the inrushing Brown as the Town youngsters strove to add to their lead, but it was Pickering who struck next, their striker nipping in with a superbly-timed header from a deflected cross.

Town extended their lead on 69 minutes when Cook played the ball through for Greening to chip into the top corner to make it 3-1.  Greening then saw the keeper make a great double save at the near post.  With the game about to end in a deserved win for Town, the floodlights failed and, after a short delay, the game was abandoned after 89 minutes of play.  The League management committee decided that the result of this game will stand.

Town: Clark, Gunn (Fenwick 70), Logan, Holmes, Clayton, Cook, Danby, Exley (Richardson 5), Thomas, Brown, Greening.

Mar 15 2010 - League Cup Quarter Final - Town 2 Pickering Town 3

After an exciting and entertaining game of football, Town's youngsters ended up on the losing side after an unbeaten league and league cup run which had lasted over two years!

Pickering were fired up for the game and were straight into the action, whereas Town looked very lethargic in the opening stages.  After only four minutes Pickering took the lead with a stunning 25-yard drive, and on 17 minutes the Pikes' Number 9 broke through and finished well to put his side 2-0 in front.

Town stirred at last, a Danny Jenkinson strike being disallowed for offside and Neil Thomas foiled by the keeper after good work from Matty Brown.  Sean Exley looked lively and set up Billy Logan for a shot which hit the post.  However on 37 minutes James Gunn lost the ball on the edge of his own box and Jenkinson's attempted clearance skewed over helpless keeper Rob Clark into the net to put Pickering three up.  Within a minute Joe Danby blasted home a half-volley to get Town on the scoresheet at last, but despite further chances Town still trailed 3-1 at the break.

The second half was an entirely different story, with Town launching wave after wave of attacks on the Pickering goal.  Brown and Thomas were both thwarted by good work from the Pikes' keeper who was then forced into a full-length save by Logan, and after 63 minutes Josh Greening fed Danby who finished calmly to make the score 3-2.  It seemed only a matter of time as Town battered an increasingly desperate Pikes defence, with substitute Darren Clough storming away down the left but foiled at the near post on three occasions by the keeper, who also made a superb double save from Danby.

In a very rare Pickering venture upfield they netted but were denied by the linesman's flag, then it was back to last-ditch defending with Clough and Jon Richardson going close to snatching a goal.  Town keeper Rob Clark joined the attack for two late set-pieces, but Pickering held out and gained the win which will see them play Brighouse Town in the semi final.

Town: Clark, Jenkinson, Clayton, Smart (Richardson 80), Danby, Gunn (Clough 45), Logan, Exley (Holmes 55), Greening, Brown, Thomas.

9 Mar 2010 - Under-19 Alliance - Goole AFC 2 Scarborough Town 5

The Under-19s played their sixth and last away league game and completed a clean sweep with a 5-2 win.  The perfect record of six away wins has been achieved by scoring 42 goals and conceding 7.

After good work from Matty Brown, Nathan Cook rifled in a 25-yarder to open the scoring.  After conceding an equaliser, Josh Greening broke the Goole offside trap and rounded the keeper to put the visitors back in front.  A free kick from a wide position was then worked goalwards for Josh Clayton to add the finishing touch and put Town 3-1 in front.

Nathan Cook failed with a penalty kick, but Town kept the ball alive and worked it back across for Greening to head his second.  The win was sealed a minute after the break when Town broke down the right and a good passing move involving Cook and Greening ended with Joe Danby netting the fifth.  Goole scored their second from a direct free kick late in the game.

Team: Clark, Jenkinson, Clayton, Smart, Danby, Gunn, Cook, Logan, Exley, Greening, Brown.  Subs used: Richardson, Foster, Davies.

9 Feb 2010 - Under-19 Alliance - Glasshoughton Welfare 0 Scarborough Town 8

In difficult pitch conditions at The Welfare Ground, the Academy youngsters powered their way to another impressive win.  The defining moment came midway through the first half when Town, already 2-0 ahead through Billy Logan and Matty Brown, conceded a penalty.  The penalty was hit cleanly towards the top corner, but Rob Clark pulled off a stunning save and then gathered the ball, quickly releasing it to set up a sweeping counter attack via Nathan Cook, Matty Brown, Josh Greening and Sean Exley to give Billy Logan a tap-in to make the score 3-0.  Town were six ahead by half time, and ran out 8-0 winners.

The goalscorers were Logan 2, Brown 2, Cook, Exley, Greening, and Danby.

Team: Clark, Jenkinson (Clough 50), Clayton, Gunn, Smart (Holmes 45), Cook, Danby, Exley, Logan, Brown, Greening (Richardson 50).

25 Jan 2010 - Under-19 Alliance -  Garforth Town 0 Scarborough Town 8

After more than two months without a game due to the wintry weather, Town's youngsters stormed back into action with a visit to top-of-the-table Garforth Town where they romped to an 8-0 win.  Striker Billy Logan helped himself to a hat-trick before being substituted after 60 minutes of the game.  The Centre of Excellence production line continues its success story, with no fewer than four sixteen-year-olds on the pitch at the end of the game.

Garforth still lead the table (13 points from 7 games) but Scarborough are second (12 points from four games and an amazing goal difference of +24).

Town's goals came from Sean Exley (2), Billy Logan (3), Josh Davies, Luke Foster and Sam Smart.

Scarborough Under-19s:   Rob Clark, Danny Jenkinson, Joe Danby, Sam Smart, Josh Clayton (Josh Davies 50), Nathan Cook (Luke Foster 55), James Gunn, Josh Greening, Sean Exley, Billy Logan (Robbie Seaton 60), Matty Brown.

17 Nov 2009 - Pocklington 0 Town U-19 4

Town's Under-19 side gained a comprehensive victory at league newcomers Pocklington Town to maintain their 100 per cent record in the Northern Alliance.

Town's first chance was clipped wide by Billy Logan after a neat ball from Sam Smart had put Josh Greening through. Then Logan set up Sean Exley whose shot was tipped away by goalkeeper Glen Andrews. The keeper also saved well at Joe Danby's feet, and Town's claims for a penalty went unanswered after Logan seemed to be taken down in the area. The opening goal came after 22 minutes when Exley converted a Greening cross, with the contrasting styles of Nathan Cook and Matty Brown in the Town midfield complimenting each other and giving Town the edge in key areas of the field. Just before the interval a curling free kick from Greening hit the Pocklington post.

On 52 minutes good work from Greening and good pressure from his colleagues kept the ball in the Pocklington area and Logan took the chance to make it 2-0. Logan then brought a great save from Andrews, but on 63 minutes Darren Clough centred for Danby to notch the third. Good work from Logan saw the ball hit low across the six-yard area with Greening sliding in but putting the ball narrowly wide. The final goal came after 72 minutes when Ryan Braithwaite hit an accurate long ball to Logan who pulled it down superbly and slotted home to make the scorelline 4-0.

Town: Clark, D Jenkinson, Smart, Gunn, Clayton (Holmes 57), N Cook (Braithwaite 65), Danby, Exley (Clough 57), Logan, Brown, Greening

12 Nov 2009 - Northern Under-19 Alliance League Cup - Appleby Frodingham 3 Scarborough Town 8

After an evenly-contested first half hour, the Academy team asserted themselves with a goal-packed display to win the Cup tie and set up a local derby with Pickering Town in the Quarter Final.
In miserable weather conditions, Town fell behind after only five minutes when a long ball was allowed to bounce and Jack Siddall nipped in to steer the ball past Rob Clark to put the home side ahead. However only two minutes later a long diagonal ball from Nathan Cook found Joe Danby who beat a man and calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner to equalise.
Both sides earned half-chances in the early stages, but a touch of skill from Matty Brown set up Town's next goal. Skipping past two tackles into the penalty area, Brown pulled the ball back for Danby to score his second and put Town 2-1 in front. On 40 minutes Brown went through on the left and was barged off the ball, the referee giving a penalty which Nathan Cook converted. In the final minute of the first half Frodingham hit the bar, but a delightful pass put Town's Logan away to pull back for Josh Greening to make it 4-1 at the interval.
On 59 minutes Brown ended a spell of intense pressure by knocking in number five, and the Steelmen's frustration boiled over with a disgraceful "tackle" on Joe Danby which reduced the home side to ten men following a red card. After 72 minutes Brown chipped a ball which the goalkeeper stretched to get a hand to but could not prevent the ball dropping behind him over the line for Town's sixth goal. Brown set up the next goal with a precision defence-splitting pass for Jon Richardson to run on to, and on 82 minutes it became 8-1 when Ryan Braithwaite worked his way into a shooting position. Although the keeper blocked his initial effort, the ball rebounded back off Braithwaite into the goal.
With the game wrapped up, the Town defence relaxed too much and allowed the home team two consolation goals in the last few minutes, but overall it was a convincing display which puts the Academy lads one step nearer defending the Cup which they won last season.

Town: Clark, D Jenkinson, Smart, Gunn (Gibb 63), Holmes (Braithwaite 55), N Cook, Danby, Exley, Logan (Richardsonn 70), Brown, Greening

FA Youth Cup - 3rd Qual Rnd - York City 3 Scarborough Town 1

Town's gallant underdogs put up a great fight before admitting defeat against an excellent York City side. City's team comprised their fifteen 17- and 18-year-old Apprentice Professionals who train 3½ days each week, whereas the Scarborough players had to dash from their various schools and colleges to get to the game in time.

Town got off to the perfect start, however, taking the lead through a fluke goal from skipper Joe Danby who charged in to block a clearance from the opposition full back and saw the ball ricochet off his shin and loop over helpless home keeper James Field.

That was as good as it got for Town, as they were forced to chase and harry the York players who were their superiors in height and weight and arguably in skill. Danby and Danny Jenkinson earned yellow cards for tackles as the team struggled to play their normal possession game. York strikers Dominic Brown and Kingsley Wetherald were a real handful, strong and direct, and it was no surprise when York equalised after 22 minutes with an excellent header. Jenkinson's forays up the right wing looked to be Town's best attacking option, but their only chance of the first half came when Sean Exley headed for goal but saw his shot deflected for a corner.

Town were stunned after 51 minutes when, having cleared their lines following a goalmouth scramble, they saw the referee pointing to the penalty spot. York converted the kick to go 2-1 ahead. Town played better football in the second half and enjoyed much more possession than in the first period, but York posed a much greater threat on goal. A good run from Danby on the left brought a cross which skidded across the 6-yard line with no-one able to get the vital touch, but Town sometimes passed the ball in dangerous areas and were lucky when Brown intercepted but shot against the crossbar.

Town's Josh Greening improved in the second half when he was pushed further forward, and Matty Brown broke through to force a good save from Field. 15-year-old Danny Glendinning gave a determined performance having entered the fray just after half time. Town never gave up the fight, and in the final stages Exley shot straight at the keeper from a narrow angle, but as Town sought an equaliser York found themselves presented with a number of chances, many of which they hit straight into the hands of Town keeper Ben Hargreaves. In the final minute City wrapped the game up with a clinical finish from 18 yards after overwhelming the Town defence.

Town: Hargreaves, Jenkinson (Davies 80), Gunn, Holmes, Fenwick (Braithwaite 68), Cook, Brown, Greening, Danby, Richardson (Glendinning 51), Exley

12 Oct 2009 - League Cup - Garforth Town 2 Scarborough Town 5

Town's youth team began their defence of the Northern Under-19 Alliance League Cup with a visit to the Genix Healthcare Stadium at Garforth.

The Cup holders took the lead early on through Matty Brown and went further ahead through top scorer Josh Greening. However the Academy side were lacking a bit of spark and conceded a goal just before half time.

The second half performance was a big improvement, and goals from Joe Danby and Neil Thomas gave the visitors a 4-1 lead. After Garforth pulled a goal back, Greening scored his second to end the game at 5-2.

Town go through to the next round where they will be away to Appleby Frodingham or Glasshoughton Welfare.

6 Oct 2009 - FA Youth Cup - Prudhoe Town 0 Scarborough Town 4

Scarborough Town's Under-18 team progressed to the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup with an impressive 4-0 win at Prudhoe Town.

Both teams started tentatively, but chances soon developed at both ends of the field. Town's Sean Exley prodded the ball just wide of the post and shots from Joe Danby and Jon Richardson were deflected out of harm's way, while central defenders James Gunn and Alistair Holmes showed great determination to block the home team's efforts.

The opening goal came on 17 minutes when Joe Danby went through on the left and pulled the ball across the goalmouth. The ball was half-cleared, but Jon Richardson pounced to slam the ball into the net from ten yards to put Town ahead. Good work from Danny Jenkinson then led to a foul in the Prudhoe area and a penalty for Town, but Nathan Cook spoilt his hundred-per-cent record from the spot by hitting the ball over the bar.

Tom Fenwick impressed at left back with timely interceptions and intelligent passing, but Prudhoe almost equalised when Alan Herbert hit a powerful long-range shot which bounced away off the goalpost. In the final minutes of the half, Town had three golden chances but Prudhoe keeper Sean Hall made great saves from Danby and Matty Brown, while Brown also hit an effort just the wrong side of the post.

In the second period, the home team had two early chances with headers, but Town hit back in the 54th minute when Exley's long run was halted by two covering defenders only for him to take a second bite and dispatch the ball neatly into the bottom corner from twenty yards to make it 2-0.

Four minutes later a long ball from Cook caused confusion in the home defence, and Richardson sprinted through to roll the ball between the posts from an almost impossible angle on the left for Town's third goal.

With Prudhoe gamely looking for a way back into the match, Town were finding more room up front, and keeper Hall had to be off his line quickly to deny Brown and Danny Glendinning, then excelled himself with full-length diving saves to keep out longer-range efforts from Cook and Josh Greening. In the final minute a scramble in the home goalmouth gave Danby a chance which he accepted to end the game at 4-0.

In the Third Qualifying Round, Town will travel to play the winners of the Chester-le-Street Town versus York City game which takes place on Thursday.

Scarborough Town Under-18s: Ben Hargreaves, Danny Jenkinson, Tom Fenwick (Ryan Braithwaite 80), James Gunn, Alistair Holmes, Nathan Cook, Joe Danby, Sean Exley (Josh Davies 77), Jon Richardson (Danny Glendinning 68), Matty Brown, Josh Greening.

28 Sept 2009 - Northern Under-19 Alliance - Pickering Town 3 Scarborough Town 7

The Under-19s hit the goal trail as they trounced local rivals Pickering Town 7-3 in a battle between the teams which finished first and second in the league's Eastern Division last season. Town were 3-2 ahead at the break but turned on the style to hit four more before the Pikes scored a late consolation. So dominant were the Boro lads that they could quite easily have reached double figures had it not been for some wayward finishing and a string of fine saves by the Pickering keeper.

Matty Brown fired Town ahead early on, but the Pikes hit back to level. Neil Thomas and Josh Greening netted further first-half goals but Pickering kept in touch with a goal before the break to make it 3-2.

Two goals from Nathan Cook early in the second half - a delightful chip and a thunderbolt free kick - put Town in total control, with Thomas and Joe Danby rubbing salt into Pickering's wounds before the home team scored their third goal late on to make the final result a little more respectable.

21 Sept 2009 - FA Youth Cup 1st Qual Rnd - Scarborough Town 3 Bedlington Terriers 1

Scarborough's Under-18s clinched a Second Qualifying Round tie away to Ryton or Prudhoe Town with a hard-earned 3-1 win over Bedlington Terriers.

In an enthralling and exciting game, the local youngsters bagged two second-half goals to wrap up the tie.

Boro took the lead after ten minutes through a neat Josh Greening finish. Further goals could have followed, but fine keeping from Ben Hargreaves and his Bedlington counterpart kept the attackers at bay.

Terriers equalised just before the break and had a good spell immediately after the restart, but two superb end-to-end moves brought Town their reward. Matty Brown charged through the visiting defence to put the reds in front, before Nathan Cook's sweet drive from the edge of the box wrapped things up.

15 Sept 2009 - Northern Under-19 Alliance - Pontefract Collieries 2 Scarborough Town 10

The Scarborough youngsters got their season off to a flying start by hitting double figures at Pontefract for the second season running.

Town didn't have it all their own way in the early stages and were 2-1 behind at one point, but they stuck with their normal brand of crisp passing and gained their rewards as the game progressed.

The goals were scored by Josh Greening (4), debutant Sean Exley (3), Neil Thomas, Danny Jenkinson and Nathan Cook (penalty).
