March 10th 1928 There was a crowd of 1,800 present to see Lovatt (2), Allison and Smith score Boro's goals in a 4-3 'friendly' win over Leeds United Reserves. The fixture had been hastily arranged as the club had no league fixture between March 3rd and 22nd. March 11th 1939 An own goal set Boro on their way to a 4-1 success at Bradford Park Avenue Reserves, with strikes for Agar, Hardy and Brown completing the set. This was the third time in 5 games Boro had scored 4 in a Midland League encounter. March 12th 1899 Loftus were beaten 3-1 in a 'friendly', the first of 4 successive wins for Boro against these opponents. Purnell scored the Seamer Road men's opener, with Beckwith then adding two more. March 13th 1915 After 5 defeats in a row, Boro produced a 3-1 victory at Stockton in the Northern League. W. Boro's goals came from Eddie Brown, Cliff Jones, a Workington defender, Johnny Powell and Peter Whyke. The victory left Boro unbeaten in the competition in 9 games. March 10th 1956 A 1-1 draw at Denaby United was Boro's best result on this date in the period. It was not a good spell for the club either, being the third of six matches played in the Midland League without a win. Jim French got the goal. March 11th 1961 Peter Vickers' goal was enough to collect the points from the game with Annfield Plain. The win was Boro's fourth in a row, with no goals let in, in the Northern Counties League. March 12th 1967 Gareth Williams, who joined Boro in 1996, was born on this day on the Isle of Wight. He made 102 Football League starts for the club, scoring 27 times. March 13th 1954 In his pre-Boro days, Eddie Brown hit two for Coventry City as the beat Shrewsbury Town in the Third Division (South), taking his league total for the season to 14. Brown scored goals regularly with all the teams he played for. March 14th 1959 Boro booked a North Riding Senior Cup Final tie against Middlesbrough Reserves by winning a semi-final replay at Stockton 2-1. An own goal opened the Reds' account, with the winner coming from Keith Bentley.
1968 - 1986
March 8th 1975 A huge crowd of 8,105 saw Boro beat non-league 'team-of-the-season' Wimbledon 1-0 in the F.A. Trophy 4th Round tie at the Athletic Ground. Tony Aveyard's goal separated the sides at the end of 90 minutes. Boro would now take on Bedford Town in the semi-finals. March 9th 1977 Boro won 11 games in the season by 1-0. Steve Deere's goal proved enough to secure two points in the fixture against Gateshead United on this date, the second in a run of four consecutive 1-0 wins. March 10th 1970 and 1973 A couple of 'firsts' were recorded on this date. Jeff Barmby's first goals for the club were scored in a 4-0 win at Gateshead, with the prolific striker netting three times. On the later date, Boro reached the F.A. Trophy semi-finals for the first time by beating Chelmsford City 2-0. Jeff Barmby scored the first in this game in Boro's first attack of the afternoon, following sustained early pressure from the Southern League team. Malcolm Thompson's goal then knocked the stuffing out of City, who faded badly afterwards. March 11th 1984 A Graham Hartley goal gave Boro a 1-0 win at Barnet. This brought a run of 4 successive draws to an end, but was followed by 4 defeats in a row. March 12th 1973 and 1975 In both years, Boro beat Bishop Auckland in the Vaux Floodlit League on this date. Malcolm Thompson and Malcolm Leask scored in a 2-1 away win on the earlier occasion. Two years later Ken Houghton and Bobby Todd (2) were the Reds' hitmen in a 3-1 home success. March 13th 1971 Alan Franks (2), Tony Lee and Jeff Barmby all scored as Boro beat Great Harwood 4-0 in the Northern Premier League. A year less a day before, Great Harwood were buried 8-0 by Boro, with Jeff Barmby hitting 4 on his home debut. March 14th 1983 The 2-0 win at Nuneaton Borough was the first of 3 away wins in a row for Boro. Mitch Cook and Neil Sellers scored.
1986 - 2007
March 8th 2003 On their way to a 7th-placed finish in the Conference, Boro won 2-0 at Leigh R.M.I.. This was one of six away victories in the season. Boro had earlier beaten Leigh by the same score at the McCain Stadium. March 9th 1999 Chris Tate scored after 5 minutes to give Boro the lead against Chester City, but the visitors equalised on the hour to dampen the spirits of the travelling Boro faithful. In three minutes shortly before the end, however, Tate and Russell struck for the Seadogs to win the game 3-1 and mean 7 points had been gathered in 3 matches. March 10th 2006 Chris Thompson's goal gave Boro a double over champions-to-be, Droylsden. It seems strange that Boro, who also earned a draw and a win against Conference North's other promoted side, Farsley Celtic, should end up being relegated. March 11th 2000 Wigan Athletic were given permission to talk to out-of-favour Bradford City midfielder Neil Redfearn, future Boro player and boss. The transfer was completed 6 days later with £112,500 the fee. Redfearn scored 6 times in 12 games to start paying the Latics back immediately. March 12th 2005 Leigh R.M.I. were beaten 3-0 in front of a crowd of 1,608. March 13th 1993 Boro beat Walsall 4-1, with Darren Foreman reaching the 24-mark for the season with two goals. Tommy Mooney and Kyle Lightbourne hit the others in what proved to be one of only two wins for the team in the last 15 league games of the campaign. March 14th 1998 An excellent 2-0 victory was earned against Leyton Orient to take Boro's unbeaten sequence to five matches. Gareth Williams hit the first in front of a crowd of 2,655, and Neil Campbell got the killer second goal.
