1879 - 1939


September 1st                  1923
A crowd of 1,500 turned out to watch Grimsby Town Reserves thrashed 5-0 in a pre-season friendly.  Boro's goal-flow came from Coulson (2), Appleby (2) and Calder.
 
September 2nd                                1899
The oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC, sent their team up to the Yorkshire coast for a friendly match prior to the start of the season.  Boro won the game 4-0 with goals from Nellis, McAlear and two others whose names can't be traced.
 
September 3rd                 1910
The Boro side marked its debut in the Yorkshire Combination with a comfortable 2-0 success against Bradford Park Avenue Reserves.  Frank and Ocky Johnson scored once each.  The official attendance was given as 1,600.
 
September 4th                 1927
Boro opened the home fixtures of their Yorkshire League campaign by beating Castleford & Allerton United by 3-1.  A crowd of 2,500 watched as Bolsover and Carey (2) scored for the Seasiders.
 
September 5th                 1914
An Ocky Johnson hat-trick and a single strike from Ness helped Boro make a successful return to the Northern League after 4 seasons in the Yorkshire Combination.  Visitors South Bank were beaten 4-2.
 
September 6th                 1925
In an F.A. Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie, Boro triumphed over local rivals, Scarborough Penguins, 5-2.  Coulson, Shaw (2), Warner and Dennis got the goals.
 
September 7th                                 1929
Boro drew their third match of the Midland League season 2-2 against Barnsley Reserves, with newcomer R. Keating and Billy Clayson scoring.  With a record of won 1, drawn 1 and lost 1, the team occupied a mid-table position.

 

1945 - 1968


September 1st                  1962
Horden Colliery were hammered 5-0 in a North-Eastern League fixture.  This was the fifth time Boro had played a league game on this date since the Second World War - and the first time the club had won!  Tommy McQuaid, Eddy Brown, Cliff Jones, Peter Whyke and Alan Franks all scored.
 
September 2nd                                1957
A 2-0 away victory at Hull City Reserves was Boro's fourth game unbeaten at the start of the Midland League campaign.  Both goals were scored by centre forward Jim Scarborough.
 
September 3rd                 1960
Annfield Plain were whupped 5-2 in a Northern Counties League Cup clash, with goals from Farmer, Franks (2), Greensmith and Vickers.  Terry Farmer's opener in this match was his 5th goal in five games.
 
September 4th                 1963
A 3-1 win at Bourne Town was Boro's first September 4th success since 1926.  Alan Franks, Cliff Jones and Johnny Powell did the damage.
 
September 5th                 1962
A superb away performance at Redcar Albion in the North Eastern League Cup saw Eddy Brown's Boro side destroy their rivals 6-0.  The Seamer Road boss helped himself to a hat-trick, with a Peter Whyke double and a goal from Alan Franks completing the scoring.
 
September 6th                 1965
Visitors Goole Town were beaten 2-0 thanks to two goals from Alan Franks.  This was Boro's third successive home win to start the season on.
 
September 7th                 1949
The existing record for the highest attendance for the opening home match of the season was broken when 5,000 turned out to see Boro smash Doncaster Rovers Reserves 6-0.  'Spud' Murphy scored three, with White, Bradley and an unknown Rovers' player adding the others.

 

1968 - 1986


September 1st                  1984
A week after hitting the second in the win over Yeovil Town, Bryan Magee scored again in the 1-1 draw with visitors Barnet.  This was Boro's third home fixture in a row and saw the attendance figure dip below 700.
 
September 2nd                                1972
Two of the 'M Squad' scored in the 2-0 success at Netherfield - Malcolm Thompson and Mike Alexander.  The win was Boro's fifth out of six at the start of the campaign and their fourth victory on the bounce.
 
September 3rd                 1977
Wigan Athletic were beaten 3-1 in front of a 2,127 Athletic Ground crowd.  Steve Deere, Gerry Donoghue (penalty) and Dave Smith scored Boro's goals in this second win in four days for Colin Appleton's men.
 
September 4th                 1985
Gary Hooley and Nigel Rose (2) scored as Barrow were beaten 3-1.  This extended Boro's unbeaten start to the campaign to four matches.  Only 655 watched, however.
 
September 5th                 1981
Visitors Worcester City were beaten by Colin Williams' goal - his fifth in the 5 opening games of the season.  With Boro's goal tally only seven altogether, Williams was crucial to the team. 
 
September 6th                 1980
Boro won all the opening three home games of the 1980-81 campaign by 1-0.  The second of these was against Bath City, with Martin Harris securing the points on this occasion.  A crowd of 1,694 were there to watch.
 
September 7th                 1968
Boro secured their first-ever home win in the Northern Premier League by defeating Bangor City by 2-0.  The goals came from Keith Adamson and Albert Broadbent, whose net-finding sent the majority of the 2,026 crowd home happy.

 

1986 - 2007


September 1st                  2001
A 2-1 victory at Woking meant Boro remained unbeaten on their travels at the start of the 2001-02 season.
 
September 2nd                                1995                      
Wigan Athletic drew 0-0 at the McCain Stadium in front of 1,949 spectators.  This was Boro's third league match unbeaten at home - a run which eventually stretched to eight games.
 
September 3rd                 1988                      
Steve Norris, Neil Thompson, Ian Bennyworth and Mitch Cook all scored in Boro's 4-1 trouncing of Peterborough United on the Posh's own ground.
 
September 4th                 1992                                      
Two goals from Geoff Horsefield and a single from Paul Cawthorne saw a 3-1 victory over Hartlepool United achieved by Boro's youngsters in the Northern Intermediate League Cup.
 
September 5th
Mark Jules, who debuted for Boro in the 1991-92 season and went on to make 58 league appearances for the club, was born on this date in 1971.
 
September 6th                                 2003                      
Conference visitors Gravesend & Northfleet were beaten 2-0.  Boro drew 4 of their next 5 matches, not winning again until October 7th.
 
September 7th                 2002
Boro secured their first Conference win of the season by thumping Kettering Town 4-1 in a match attended by 1,078 supporters.  Those present were treated to two goals from Bimbo Fatokun … and the celebrations which followed.
