Scarborough Town FC newsletter - issue 29 - 28th August 2010

The past few months have been very eventful and ultimately very disappointing.  Several newsletters were planned, but circumstances changed on a daily basis and made it impossible to keep everyone informed of the latest happenings.

Scarborough Town were elected to membership of the Northern Counties East League but, when it became clear that planning permission for floodlights would not be achieved by the league's deadline, the membership was withdrawn.

The NCEL would have been satisfied if Scarborough Borough Council had simply made a written statement that planning permission for floodlights would be granted in due course, but the Council were unable to give this assurance.  The Council's own "target determination date" for making a decision had been in early July, but the application has still not even been discussed by the Planning Committee.  It appears that objections from various sources had been received by the Council and have swayed their actions.

Town's late attempt to revert to the Teesside League was unsuccessful, therefore the team will not compete in a league this season.  However the club has certainly not disbanded; we fervently believe that the town should boast a team composed of local players at a suitable level of the non-league system.  We intend therefore to continue with social and fundraising activities and will apply for membership of a league at Step 7 or above for 2011-12.  There are a number of possibilities here, but this will depend to a large extent on the facilities we will have available to us (pitch, floodlights, etc) at the determination date of 31st March 2011.

Because of Town's situation, our successful youth team was excluded from the Northern Under-19 Alliance under the rule that it did not "have a senior team playing at a suitable level of the football system".  Scarborough Athletic kindly offered to take this team under their wing for one season, but the league would not accept this compromise.  We therefore intend to re-enter the youth team in this league for 2011-12 once we have arranged a league in which the first team can compete.

As mentioned above, fundraising activities will continue and we would be very pleased if you feel able to offer any support.  We are holding a Sportsmen's Dinner at North Cliff Golf Club on Saturday 2nd October at 7.30 pm, £30 per ticket, or £270 for table of ten.  The Prediction Competition will recommence in September (£1 per week entry, to forecast six football results - £50 weekly prize).  In due course, there will be a Race Night (possibly in November) and a Christmas Draw.  A One Hundred Club will be started soon, and there will be a "Fantasy League" on the website www.nonleague matters.net   Please contact us if you require further details of any of these activities.

Scarborough Town fulfilled two "pre-season" friendlies in July 2010 and acquitted themselves admirably.  A visit to Marske United of the Northern League, who reached the last 16 of the FA Vase last season, resulted in a 2-2 draw after a late Marske equaliser.  A game at Bridlington Town, champions of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, brought Town an impressive and richly-deserved 3-1 win.  Town would undoubtedly have been successful in the Northern Counties East League this season and would have shown that local players can easily compete at this level.  This is backed up by the fact that many Town players, despite the imminent start of the 2001-11 season, were snapped up by clubs in the NCEL or higher.  Currently Carl Cook, Nathan Cook, Joe Danby and Mark Barber are at Bridlington Town, Robbie Hawkes at Whitby Town, Wayne Brooksby at North Ferriby United, Joel Ramm, Dean Craig and Josh Greening at Pickering Town, Neil Waterfield at Marske United with others reverting to local football.

The Wearside League championship trophy and the impressive Sunderland Shipowners Challenge Cup remain on display at Scarborough Town Hall in St. Nicholas Street, and the Northern Under-19 Alliance (Division East) championship trophy is on display at George Pindar Community Sports Centre.
