SCARBOROUGH TOWN FC - A NEW BEGINNING
What happened to the old Scarborough Football Club? Boro were one of the oldest clubs in the country, but sadly had been in debt for a number of years and had already been perilously close to extinction on several occasions. Ironically, the club had made a number of changes which had allowed it to "break even" over the course of the 2006-07 season, but this was not enough to save the club which was formally wound up on 20th June 2007.
So all the club's activities came to an end? The gates of the McCain Stadium were padlocked, and the football ground has not been used for the past year. However, the one piece of good news was that the club's superb Centre of Excellence, Football in the Community scheme and youth team were retained by moving them to George Pindar Community Sports College at Eastfield, with the additional help and support of Sheffield United FC. The entire Boro team of volunteer youth coaches remained faithful to the club, and the youth team continued its membership of the Northern Under-19 Alliance under its new name of Scarborough Academy. The club has continued to run teams at Under-12, Under-13, Under-14, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 levels, with fixtures against the likes of Hull City, Halifax Town, York City, Hartlepool United and others.
And "Scarborough Town"? What's all this? The youth system has not only prospered, it has achieved its long-held plan to extend the age-groups involved. Already, younger players from the age of eight are being brought into the training scheme, and now we have extended the system into an older age group by forming an adult team to play in the Teesside League. This team is formed by young players who have progressed through the Scarborough FC / Scarborough Academy youth system.
So is Scarborough Town an independent club? Yes and no. It retains strong links with George Pindar Community Sports College but has its own management committee which will raise the funds necessary to run this team. Club membership is open to anyone on payment of a small annual fee, and the club is run on a democratic basis. The club committee contains townspeople who are a long-standing part of the local footballing scene.
Where does the team play? What are the club colours? Initially, the club's home matches are being played at the McCain Sports Club in Cayton, Scarborough. All the Academy teams up to Under-19 play in red and white stripes, therefore the senior team will have the same kit but with different sponsors. There will no admission charge to matches, but spectators will be encouraged to contribute to club funds by buying programmes, raffle tickets, etc. We are proud to bring senior football back to the town of Scarborough after a year's absence.
How can I help? Firstly, by filling in a membership form. It's only £10 per year to be a full member of Scarborough Town FC. Family membership, junior membership and business membership are also available. Secondly, by coming along to watch the games and support the team. Thirdly, by taking part in any of our fund-raising events. There are also a number of sponsorship and advertising opportunities.
How do I get in touch? Click the "Contact Us" button at the top of the page for further details.
