SCARBOROUGH TOWN - A NEW BEGINNING

What happened to the old Scarborough Football Club?
Boro were one of the oldest clubs in the country, but sadly had been in debt for a number of years and had already been perilously close to extinction on several occasions. Ironically, the club had made a number of changes which had allowed it to "break even" over the course of the 2006-07 season, but this was not enough to save the club which was formally wound up on 20th June 2007. For all the details and stats of the old Scarborough FC, please see our sister website at www.seadogsfans.co.uk

So all the club's activities came to an end?
The gates of the McCain Stadium were padlocked, and the football ground site was bought by the local Council and earmarked for housing. However, the one piece of good news was that the club's superb Centre of Excellence, Football in the Community scheme and youth team were preserved by moving them to George Pindar Community Sports College at Eastfield. The entire Boro team of volunteer youth coaches remained faithful to the club, and the youth team continued its membership of the Northern Under-19 Alliance under a new name of Scarborough Academy. The club continued to run teams at Under-12, Under-13, Under-14, Under-15, Under-16 and Under-19 levels, with fixtures against the likes of Hull City, Halifax Town, York City, Hartlepool United and others.

And "Scarborough Town"? What's all this?
The youth system not only prospered, it achieved its long-held plan to extend the age-groups involved.  We extended the system into an older age group by forming an adult team which entered the Teesside League in August 2008. This team was formed by young players who have progressed through the Scarborough FC / Scarborough Academy youth system.

So is Scarborough Town an independent club?
Yes. Initially the team was formed as a progression from the Academy based at George Pindar Community Sports College but had its own management committee to raise the funds necessary to run this team.  The Sports College has now unfortunately ended its commitment to the Academy which has therefore been closed.  Scarborough Town therefore runs wholly independently.  Club membership is open to anyone on payment of a small annual fee, and the club is run on a democratic basis. The club committee contains townspeople who are a long-standing part of the local footballing scene.

Where does the team play? What are the club colours?
The club's home matches are played at McCain Sports Club in Osgodby Lane, Cayton, on the southern outskirts of Scarborough.  Refreshments are available and the club issues a programme for every game. We are upgrading facilities when finances allow. We remain proud to have brought senior football back to the town of Scarborough after a year's absence.  Initially the team played in red and white stripes, and in 2009-10 in red and black stripes.

How did the 2008-09 season progress?
We played our first ever match, a pre-season friendly, at Hall Road Rangers on 12th July 2008 and won 3-1. A second friendly, at Hutton Cranswick, resulted in a 2-1 win. On 13th August 2008 we played our first competitive fixture, in Teesside League Division Two, which we won 5-0 at Teesside Athletic. Having begun the season with four away fixtures, we played our first home game on 30th August 2008. The game was watched by 223 spectators and resulted in a 3-0 win for Town over Grangetown YCC. We then remained unbeaten in the league throughout the season and rightly earned the championship title. We also progressed as far at the Quarter Final of the League Cup before losing to Nunthorpe Athletic, the eventual winners. Meanwhile the youth side completed a League and Cup double in the Northern Under-19 Alliance.

And 2009-10?
Town moved up into the Wearside League (a "Step 7" league) and was again tremendously successful.  After a season-long neck-and-neck race against Ryhope CW, Town eventually pulled six points clear to win the league championship.  The final home game of the season was watched by a crowd of over 400. We also won the Sunderland Shipowners Cup by beating Teesside Athletic in the Final.  The youth team once again won the championship of the Northern Under-19 Alliance.

But what on earth happened then...?

Having resigned from the Wearside League, the club was provisionally accepted into the Northern Counties East League - but when planning permission for floodlights suffered yet another delay, the League was forced to omit Town from its plans.  Therefore Town was without a league for one season.  This also meant that the Northern Under-19 Alliance excluded our youth side as it did not have a senior side "at an appropriate level of the league system".

Despite these setbacks, the committee of Scarborough Town remained fully committed to the ideal of providing a team in which local players can play in Scarborough at an appropriate level.  Fund-raising events continued, and the committee re-formed the team for 2011-12.

DON'T THROW YOUR OLD MOBILE PHONE AWAY!

We need donations of old mobile phones (either working or not - but the phone must have a battery...)

Old phones can be handed to any committee member at home games. We will then send them for recycling.
